Airplane down... Castle Rock, CO

Ugh. Sounds like she was in trouble with some icing and diverted to KAPA and went down on the RNAV. They are reporting she is still alive and managed to extricate herself from the wreck after hitting some powerlines.

Ooof, yeah been misting and damn cold all day long here. Gotta be a nice icing layer out there. Not speculating, but no place for GA aircraft without ice protection.

I just landed after departing KFNL. There's a ton of ice from 9000' feet down.I did type I and IV deice before departure and made it out ok but still got enough ice to make me think twice.

What is a glasair (if the article is correct) doing out in the dark in that kind of weather? At least, the article said it happened around 7 PM and I'm guessing especially in 2 SM BR it's pretty dark in CO by that time of the evening.

Depends on the plane. They can be outfitted to be capable of almost anything, with the likely (but not impossible) exception of ice. Modern experimental avionics are awesome.

The Glasair I/II/III tend toward the more hardcore end of the experimental market, but since she survived I'm pretty sure this was a Sportsman or Glastar. Very strong design.

The weather was very nasty. Here at KAPA it was IFR all day with mist and freezing temperatures. At 7 it's pretty dark here. I was flying the night before around the same time and it was pitch black out.

It's been freezing fog for the past two days. Sitting in an airplane is the last thing I'd be doing.

I departed around 1500 and we didn't pick anything. Of course, we were on top about a minute and a half later, I wouldn't have wanted to loiter in it.

That's crazy. We went into APA at about three this morning. At that time it was 2-300 OVC and a couple miles vis. with freezing mist. I wouldn't have wanted to be tooling around in a Glasair in that. Glad there weren't any fatalities here.

We were going to repo early this morning but had sense enough to just go at scheduled time after that crap went through... we were flying a fully equipped jet and avoid where we have a choice...

We had to do a Cat II yesterday and today (both morning) into DEN. I talked to my g/f last night (Monday night) around the time this happened, and she said it was freezing mist. Not a great time to be flying a Glasair. Reminds me of the Mooney that crashed in COS a few years ago.
