FRANKFURT AM MAIN - Some time ago I visited the premises of a flight training center in Europe, and moreover I had the opportunity of sitting at the controls of one of the biggest simulators they have : an Airbus A340-300.
So it turned out to be a four-engine airliner, a long-haul one with high seating capacity and modern avionics. Briefing before the simulator (full-flight simulator, FFS Level D), raised on six jacks, with a 200 ° sight on the aircraft bow, its instructor has been getting on in the years, with even a contagious enthusiasm.
He obviously loves his machine and wants to show us all what it's capable to do. We're now inside, the cockpit door is closed. I'm seated in the first officier seat, I'm looking in front of me with that height impression of the runway.
I'm now approaching a big airport located in Europe. "Cleared to land runway 25R" Visibility is perfect. Now, I'm at 1150 feet, 148 knots, full flaps and I'm watching my velocity at the EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System) ... my right hand on the sidestick and my left hand on the throttle levels.
I'm on the axis, then a robotic voice reverberated in the cockpit : "four hundred, three hundred, two hundred, one hundred, fifty, forty, thirty, twenty, retard, ten, five .."
I put the throttle levels to zero, reverse... I landed with an Airbus A340..WAW!
I smiled proudly! What a magical moment!
I thank the instructor with a warm handshake.
