Saab Ramp Departure

I was standing on the roof of the garage at TPA yesterday wondering how this Saab was going to get out of its spot, as there was a ground cart blocking its way, as well as other aircraft. Probably not impressive to anyone else, but I didn't realize a Saab could turn on a dime like a 172. (sorry for the poor clarity)

We turn out like that in ATL all the time and I have not noted any more tire wear than normal.

Edit to add: after watching the video again, the Saab will turn tighter than that.

A little differential braking, full tiller, throw one into deep beta, the other a touch of power. Voila!

You can make a 1900 pirouette like a ballerina if you're good.

Yea watching those guys peel out like that at ATL is pretty normal. I think it's only on the alpha pad that they can't really turn that way since they're right on the edge of the ramp. They get pushed back like the big boys at that point.

Nah... Off the alpha spot we were blowing Delta's garbage by turning out. I know how much power it takes to turn out of that spot. Figured we were blowing garbage all the way to 26R.

Every turbo prop I've flown turns tighter than any nosewheel single. It gets real impressive if the nosewheel will go to 90*.

The Dash will go up to something ridiculous like 120 degrees in free castor mode iirc.

This post brought to you by beta from my iPhone.

Strictly prohibited from reverse taxi ops. I have seen maintenance back one up and it is impressive.

I used to back the Mitsi in to a spot by sticking my head out the cargo hatch (maybe like 4 ft from the prop...it was uh, loud), but I'm not sure it would be exactly what you'd call "an approved procedure". Wouldn't do much at idle, but with the conditions at flight, you could go backwards in a hurry. It's a little disconcerting the first time you hit the brakes and the nose starts coming up... :D

You're not supposed to use the brakes. Just bring it back out of beta at flight idle and that should be plenty.

Yeah, until there's some courier running along, smoking a camel non-filter and arguing with her parole officer, trying to get diced by Dr. Garrett's brilliant contraption.
