New to miami, looking for a cheap old 172 to rent. I don't know where to start down here.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what airports to fly out of, and what a good price is for down here? I just want to tool around, I am not training or anything.

Depends on what part of Miami you are in. On the North side Opa-Locka is your best bet. You could even go a little farther North and go to North Perry in Miramar. If you're in South Miami, Kendall-Tamiami Airport is good. I used NS Aviation at North Perry: http://www.nsaviation.com/

Thanks ill look into those. I am in miami beach around 80th street. Guess I should have mentioned that.

Dean International in KTMB usually has the best prices. The owner Robert Dean is a very honest and fair man as well. www.flymiami.com

Can't vouch for his prices, but their pilots sure are terrible. My home airport is a destination for their cross country time building pilots and they are just about as scary as they get.

Sorry for the brief hijack, but I have a friend that instructs out of OPF, so if you need any info send me a PM and I'll get you his information.

That's a pretty poor generalization. Your student pilots are better than someone else's student pilots? How experienced and knowledgeable were you when you were LEARNING to fly? I will agree there have been a few bad apples, but that exists in any group. Calling an entire school of students and instructors terrible is asinine and extremely unprofessional.

The OP is also looking for a cheap plane to rent, not an instructor. I don't see why you felt the need to make such an irrelevant and inaccurate statement.

So you're pretty much right in the middle, maybe a little closer to OPF. You could go to either TMB or OPF. Just look for the best prices and go with that.

I think we have a shill for Dean in here. I have been to the place. It's completely disorganized and the planes are decrepit.

I have lived in Miami for a few years and finding a reputable (non-sleazy) operator can be tough. I don't have a specific rental recommendation other than that you may want to skip Dean. Best of luck to you.

Well I am not going to get in to an internet argument, just sharing the observations that myself and others in the area have made including post #10 above. And the three reviews on Yelp over an 18 month period seem to agree.

Their creepy youtube videos were enough to keep me from applying for a job there when they had an ad on climb to 350 a year or two back.

Did you read those yelp reviews? Two speak of instruction.. not what the OP is looking for. He clearly said he is looking for a cheap old 172 to rent. The second poster is also blatantly wrong by saying Dean International is not approved for part 141 training, makes you wonder about their credibility or if they are just trying to bad mouth the place because they have "shills" about it.

The third is a valid grievance and it is very unfortunate that it happened. I have no rebuttal and hope it was an isolated incident and a miscommunication.

I haven't been to Dean in a few years but it wasn't a bad place to rent a decent plane for a reasonable price. Zidac said the planes are decrepit but I personally had worse experience with maintenance (or lack thereof) at other operators on the field. YMMV
