National Airlines B747-400 Freighter (BCF) Down in Bagram, Afghanistan

Judging by the video....it appears that the flap setting was at 20 or 25.......if I recall this is sop for a 747-400. (Overloaded aircraft) maybe ? Severe Tailstrike...resulting in cargo shift ?

You don't know what you're talking about. Actually, pretty much all speculation on what was going on to the airplane in regards to gear movement, how we climb out, basic weight and balance info in regards to the 744 is way off.

I fly 747-400s and I approve this message.

For what it's worth:
News reports tonight are stating the investigators "suspect fraudulent cargo manifest". As an example, the investigator specifically mentioned the listing of a golf cart but discovered a 4 wheeler (ATV?) in the wreckage instead.

Well I was merely implying speculation hence the abundance of ? Marks and liberal dosages of maybe. (Didn't intend on ruffling the feathers of the "holier than thou 747 captain") sheesh ! Btw everything is specilation until the official investigation is concluded....is it not ? (Shrugs shoulders)

I'm honestly shaking my head over here. I've never flown a heavy anything, but can we stop speculating and treating this thing like it was a 1600lb Cessna 150 during a stall? This was a loaded 747.

I still can't believe that video. Just terrifying. I don't even want to think about, let alone speculate about, what was going on in that cockpit.

Do you make it a habit to insult members in every thread?

Why are you still here? Take your attitude with you and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

To be fair, people could have just explained to him how he was wrong rather than just bashing his presumptions. Everyone is hear to learn something - and if you know more about something than someone else, educate us. Unless you're Waco.
I agree however due to his behavior towards members in other threads he's probably worn out any sort of courtesy. Anyways, not trying to derail this thread.

I just don't get it.
  • Brent noted the position of the flaps.
  • Al Qaeda says a missile shoot down.
Mark blew up over the flap setting?

Let this serve as a warning to all (If you have to ask, I am talking to you). Keep the personal insults to yourself. The other members of the community don't care to hear your pissing contests. You can either get along or move along. Plain and Simple......

But why? I never understood this, where's the harm in running through "what if" scenarios? That's basically what recurrent is for, speculating what might happen. As someone said earlier, if it isn't a load shift at least it has brought awareness and people will be triple checking how secure their loads are.

I don't know what you guys problem is (brent and those with a beef with brent), but take it the hell outside. It all seems petty while reading and thinking about the subject matter of THIS thread.

All of your assumptions, as well as pretty much all others I've read on this thread, are incorrect. The one thing that was correct was that Flaps 20 is a correct position for takeoff.

Climb angles, climb profiles, weight & balance, overweight assumptions, physical characteristics of load shift, gear actuation. None of those assumptions have any semblance to reality in 747 operations, let alone the horrible consequences of what probably happened to this jet.

No kidding.

Obviously I only fly the barbie fun jet, but on takeoff you're a lot closer to stall speed than you really want to be. At that altitude, you just don't have enough room to recover from a stall. Wouldn't stop me from trying, but...
