FAA issues ATIS for MANPADS threat LA area

I would think it would be simple. Most areas under approach and departure paths are parking lots and unsecured industrial areas. I dont think a terrorist would need to go out of their way to find a secure place to launch one. They could easily do it at a relatively close position. This all probably stemmed from some jackass making a bogus threat or warning. I just don't think there is a terrorist network with the reach to do something like this here anymore without getting detected.

The reason the cable news media didnt touch the story is probably because they didn't want to see Anderson Cooper attempt to explain what MANPADS are in front of a national audience.

This already happened folks....

Just because it's a different country, doesn't make it any less real.

Admittedly not everyone's favorite city East L.A. is a far cry from Baghdad. I mean at least the proximity to Syria, Iran and Veryverybadistan isn't nearly the same issue as with Baghdad. Also there was that whole Jihad/War thingy.

Fair enough someone was asking what kind of damage it would do, there is a precedent I guess is all

Not saying it couldn't happen but even if you were to set up a portable air defense system near say Compton, I'm sure that someone in the neighborhood would mention it to the authorities. There are bad people who do all kind of bad things there yes but good people too who would notice something. Since aunt Sally may be on here way to XYZ to visit the family they may be really likely to speak with the right authorities.

the man that mentioned flightaware - top points - it wouldn't take a lot to integrate the 2...

There is a much better target in LA that would impact the economy worse than another aviation strike. I know it has been discussed in ICE since 9/11.

No one in Compton would say a word. They are to busy dodging cops and immigration. Find a spot in a back alley somewhere that lines up well with final to LAX, climb out the back of the VW van, put it on your shoulder, and aim. It would only take a few seconds.

Something like Back to the Future??? 8)

What's the deal with it being a Volkswagen van? Don't go hatin' on the Essential Bus.

Would you even need a missile? I feel like even just getting a group of people together with pistols under the approach path would be plenty. THAT is the scenario I'm surprised doesn't happen, or at least hasn't been reported.

US did have that 737 with a bullet hole going into PHL (I think) a year or two ago. Then again, probably nothing new.

Every single survey operator that I know of has had bullet holes discovered in their planes. But these are usually • hunters that can't shoot for crap at long range. Who would at 8 in the morning and 59 bud lights? :) On approach, I figure about 50 rounds concentrated at the wing route or nose would probably take down everything under the sun. However, the types I have in mind can't shoot any better than the police either! :)

You do know Compton isn't under the LAX final approach path right? Did you mean Inglewood? South Central? Watts? Downey? Personally I'd be more worried about Dockweiler Beach, and I hope the state parks rangers stepped up their patrols that day.

Probably people that think you're scouting out their pot farm.

How does the targeting on these work? Are they generally heat seeking or point and shoot? Was curious what the survivability of such an incident would be on something 73 or larger. I assume it would depend on point of impact/altitude.

A MANPAD is an IR-guided missile (a 'heat-seeker' in layman's terms). Their capability runs the gamut from poor to outstanding. Their effectiveness also depends on the operator -- although they can be 'point and shoot', it does take a little bit of training and experience to make them work properly.

In general, the warhead on a MANPAD is comparatively pretty small, so I would wager on an airliner it would tear up one engine -- maybe it would separate from the pylon -- but certainly would not blow up the entire aircraft. It might be mortally wounded, it might not. Lots of 'it depends' in that scenario.

A MANPAD could be stashed in the bed of a pickup or the back of a big SUV -- there is no infrastructure to it (remember, 'MANPAD' means 'man-portable air defense'). The "set up" would take a minute or two, and shooting it takes less than a minute itself. By the time anyone had any idea what was going on, the missile would be in flight and the shooter could be starting up the getaway vehicle.
