Graduation soon and want to line something up!

Hey,
I'm graduating from USU flight school in April. I currently have my Commercial (SEL/MEL, Instrument) and will have my CFI. Currently 240TT

I know there is always the CFI route... I just wanted to know if anyone had any other suggestions on low time jobs. I'm trying to line something up for this summer.

This is a pretty cynical crowd. If you dont conform to the normal route of CFI, youll get eaten alive here.

CFR Title 14 Part 119.1e has a list.

And yes, the chorus will be along shortly to tell you how horrible of a pilot you will be without your cfi. I have no idea how I managed 3000 hours without one and didn't kill myself. I should probably go get one before I crash.

CFIing got me up to 1000 hours in almost 3 years. Pathetic. 2400 hours in the two years following and better experience(to MY CFI job at least). YMMV

Aviation is a worthless semantics game though...

The options are meet somebody who owns a plane that will hire you or CFI. I know a few people that landed jobs with less than 300 hrs but outside of a regional job, which those days are over now, it is extremely rare. Once you hit 500 a few more doors will open.

I don't think that's true to say not becoming a CFI makes you a horrible pilot, but I do think becoming a CFI really opens your eyes to a lot of things that you thought were second nature that you have to teach others. With-in that, usually as a flight instructor you really sharpen your own skills because when you teach another student something you're constantly reminded, *oh man I really need to remember that. That's important.* Also you start to have students ask you questions about things you never thought of before, and in that you find the best answer and you refine an area of knowledge or skill that you had never thought about in a certain way before. Being a flight instructor also helps to teach you to be responsible for an airplane, a student's time and money, and you become better at managing a flight in general as your student gets horribly lost and behind sometimes.

I think there are some people who will never be CFIs who are great pilots, and if given the opportunity to be a flight instructor they would be good at it.

With only 240TT, as others have said, it will be difficult to find a flying job unless you know somebody or have networked your way into a job. I have some friends with less than 500 hours doing sky-dive. One of my friends who is a CFI flying sky-divers, through that job has met other pilots who needed flight instruction. He has gotten a handful of free lance flight instructing jobs both multi and single.

Thanks for the responses. I know those jobs are far and few between but I am trying. I figured other people might know more about it.

Nope. The company I worked for only wanted a single engine commercial certificate... and did hire with such low time.

Yeah, I thought I had seen somewhere that a few of the mapping companies didn't have the 500TT limit. That's why I said most. Are you still mapping with that company?

Long gone. I am however, finally making more money than I did there.
