Man thrown from experinental plane

My experience with experimental's - the builder will try to save a loose canopy at the expense of everything else.

Pilot will say screw it and let the canopy go, builder totally forget the thing isn't on the ground. Seen it before!

I could see that... especially a non-pilot builder who was just learning to fly. Then again, I know people--pilots, even--who've hung out the door of Cessna retracts trying to get the gear to come down with a towbar, so...

I have quite a bit of door open time flying divers. Even in turbulence, you pretty much have to want out of the plane. The sudden rush of air, combined with the fact that there is now an opening big enough to fit through can be quite intimidating, but that's all it is. Airplanes with canopies...I know nothing about, but I laugh when people get all nervous about a Cessna door being open. The first words out of my mouth are "forget the door- fly the plane". Interestingly enough, you'll get killed worrying about the door being open and that's the extent of the danger of the open door- your reaction.

This!
It happened in a Citation a few years back. perfectly operational airplane with an open door. Crashed and killed two.....crazy!

The instructor here has some liability if he wasn't wearing his belt either. This is a shame.....crap way to go.

According to that article, the pilot was not a student, he was experienced and purchased the Zodiak after the original builder was killed in some other crash late last year, he was simply getting some dual in the airplane he purchased.

There is just no excuse for anyone not to wear a seat belt or harness. They're there for a reason. It's mind-boggling why so many people choose not to wear them.

I get it because we live in a country whereas no one wants anybody else to tell them what to do!

Next time any of you fly commercial, watch how many passengers take their seatbealts off as soon as the "Seatbelt" sign is turned off, or how many take them off as soon as the plane lands, but before it is parked.

I never understood this, I don't even know I'm wearing it half the time. What's the big deal with keeping it on?

Yeah, a lot of people have that anti-authority attitude and just don't want to be told what they should do, and others think they'll look like wimps if they put it on (macho attitude!). Others are simply blithely unaware of the dangers involved, or have never been in a mishap on the road/in the air, and that spurs their belief in their own invulnerability through complacency. All good examples of how entertaining a hazardous attitude can lead to disaster in the right kind of conditions if someone's luck runs out.
