Getting ready for my CFI-I ride

Well, I guess it is time. Getting ready to do my CFI-I ride next month (I'm a CFI-A/CFI-G). Lots of studying, as almost all of the flying I do is severe VFR in FL, but hopefully not too much, I usually file whenever I'm doing a X/C anywhere.

The big question, what does the peanut gallery recommend studying (other than the PHAK/AC's/IPH/etc)? Will most likely be doing the ride in a pretty basic PA-28.

The DPE that did mine was really interested in seeing a lesson plan for an off-the-street IPC. I had to create a scenario that would satisfy all the requirements for it. Other than that, just be confident in the common regs for IFR flying (what three things for landing, what is required for a safety pilot, aeronautical experience requirements) and the basics of control/performance vs. primary/supporting methods. Also, we spent a decent amount of time going over the six areas of SRM from the front of the PTS. The flight was pretty easy, but the ground was harder than my CFI ride.

Good luck!!

My DPE for my II add-on handed me the PTS and said start talking... 3 hours later we went flying. 1.5 flight. All in all it wasn't nearly as bad as the initial CFI (obviously).

My CFII was with the same guy who had done my CFI Initial. It was very straight forward. Oral was just over one hour. He only had me teach one lesson which was on holds. We talked for the rest of the time on things he saw students do as a DPE which scared him etc. Really was more of a conversation of how to produce safe instrument pilots. Flight was just over a hour as well. We shot the bare minimum number of approaches required and called it a day.

I hope to do mine soon as well. I've started creating IR lesson plans and studying for the written, but so far my main focus has been "flying" the hell out an AATD I have access to in order to be as proficient as possible before getting with my CFI to do the flight portion. Not nearly as much work as the initial, but I still treat it with the same level of seriousness.

Thats how I felt before mine... I was more worried about the flight than the ground. I have access to a Redbird AATD for $7 bucks an hour and I just flew the crap out of that until I felt proficient in shooting talking through all the approaches I could and also holding and DME arcs. The flight was pretty easy all things considered. We did unusual attitudes, a DME arc, RNAV approach, VOR approach, a hold at the FAF, and then a partial panel ILS to a full stop. Pretty quick and painless.

Signed quite a few guys off for the CFII ride, seems wo vary wildly based on the DE. From guys who fly the whole thing and want to be critiqued, to a guy to does his exact IRA profile from the right seat.

Seems to be by far the least consistant checkride, at least with the 4-5 examiners I've used. Might be the one ride a gouge (at least a heads up) on that examiner might be of help.

It will be with an examiner I've done a ride with before, not sure which, but there aren't many here.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I'm not expecting any big surprises. Unlike the finer points of eights on pylons, I think I can teach instrument procedures mostly without talking out my ass.

Mine Oral was the same way DE didn't speak, the flight was also straight PTS short and basically like i was solo.

I have my initial CFII ride on the 16th out of the Dallas area. The FSDO has started farming out the rides to DPEs since the budget cuts were mentioned. Good luck on your ride. I have been aiming for the ability to teach anything that's in the pts. I figured if I can teach a lesson on anything and everything, I should know it as well.

I just did my CFI-I ride yesterday with a DPE. It was pretty straight forward about 1.3 ground/oral with 1.2 flight time. We did ILS, GPS, and a VOR. I did all of the flying from the right seat, with foggles for the VOR only. We did steep turns, and unusual attitudes. It was not bad, except to the winds gusting to 30 knots at a nearly direct crosswind to the ILS.
