Detroit Area Controllers

I flew into DTW for the first time today. For some reason I had it in my mind that it was going to be a nightmare, especially with the lousy weather. I must say, all the controllers were very professional and very friendly. First experience was a positive one, though I can't say the same for the weather. Thanks for a good job to anyone who works that area!

I fly out of YIP right next door... the folks on 118.95 are typically very accommodating. The tower controllers at DTW are usually pretty happy to have us over for pattern in the evenings, as well.

Oh you must not have pushed from gate C37 to runway 21R. Contact ramp 127.82, ground 132.72, ground 121.8, ground 119.45 and that's just to turn the corner!

The guys are pretty professional and generally very patient though. Things typically run fairly smooth which says a lot given how terribly the airspace is laid out.

Haha, yeah, that's the truth. They do have a load of frequencies at that airport!

You must not fly out of there at 11:30 at night. One guy working the entire airport on one frequency (tower and ground). I was cleared for takeoff before I left the ramp.

I cannot tell you how happy it makes me that while reading this I realized I don't remember any DTW freqs.

After 10p the place is generally a ghost town. It's best when you arrive after that time. You can cleared for the visual like 40 miles out. Put the track vector on the end of the runway and 250 kts until 5 nm out..... soooo nice.

DTW is normally pretty darn good. Although getting DTW permission to turn the YIP field opposite of their flow is another...

Used to pull out of ASIG (far east side) every night at 12:00am scheduled. If I could get departure clearance by 11:59pm, it was cleared for takeoff 21L at S5. If not, it was a mandatory 22R for noise abatement. That leg always ran early.

That would be a hell of a taxi from ASIG to 22R... that's almost on in another timezone.

You also forgot to add in 128.82 3 times to call for a push crew.
