Delta DC-9 off runway (in grass) at SAV

Oh man, I miss my 280KIAS "Slats Extend!"

Put me 10,000 abeam the numbers on a downwind and I can give you a smooth "short" approach without much effort.

757 with winglets? YOOOOO funny guy, GI!

Because the canadians can't design an airplane well we're down to not being able to put our flaps out until 200kts in the short RJ. With every flap related AD we get, the speed gets slower.

Delta is the only scheduled air carrier in the us that still flies the DC9/W. They are reducing the routes those fly as well. I was told last year by a dc9 out of bna that delta was replacing all of em by DEC of 2013.

We use to have quiet a few DC9's come through our airspace over bna but over the last 6-9 months it has slowed to a just a couple a day.

One of the last planes you have to fly the entire trip...the end of an era for sure.

What, no autopilot?

"Delta 342 on the visual for runway number 1 but we'd like to circle to runway number 2 or 3 if available."

By the way, we still operate the DC-9-10 (and -30)... old school! But the -10 is my favorite to fly. It's just old and raw!!! MANLY!!! :D

It has an autopilot. More or less a pitch and roll AP. There is no altitude level off function or a radial hold function. Basically is has vertical speed, heading hold (only on CA's side), a roll knob, and a LOC/GS function. There is a flight director that can be used for ILS approaches but that is all you can really do with it because it's not connected to the HDG bug or the pitch command of the AP. it actually has a separate roll and pitch command panel just for the flight director so no one uses it because it actually increases your work load.

The best part of flying the 9 is the TO. The initial pitch for the 1st 1000' until you pull the thrust back to "quiet EPR" is around 20 degrees nose up. The first 3000' in that airplane is BUSY!

Delta was the launch customer in the US for the DC-9-10 in 1964/65 (?) and is the last carrier in the US to still operate the (straight) DC-9. MD-80,87,88,90 etc don't count. :)

Heard the -10 was a rocket. I flew the -40 a few times but it was on the way out when I was starting out.

I remember seeing the power backs off the gate in DTW. Holy crap those were awesome. Shook the whole parking garage.

I remember sitting on an Eastern DC9 when I was a kid doing one out of ATL. There was tremendous noise and ramp debris going everywhere.

I take it you no longer fly for that smaller east coast regional...? probably havent for some time I am guessing.

Hey HEY... as one of the only Canadian on this forum I feel obligated to defend my nations biggest aerospace provider....

Except the RJ 1/2 is a wretched airplane, while I've never flown them, travelling on them for 20 minutes feels like a cross-continental trip on a Greyhound bus, and working them in my job is like trying to control Baby Grand Pianos with wings strapped on.

DC-9-83, C-FRYH, was operating as flight JGO191 from Toronto, ON to Calgary, AB. During the touchdown on runway 34 in Calgary, the aircraft departed the runway surface to the west and traveled for approximately 1800 feet beside the runway before becoming airborne. The aircraft struck a runway hold sign during the excursion resulting in some damage to the flaps and landing gear. The extent of damage to the aircraft is unknown at this time. The aircraft returned for a successful second landing. There were no injuries to passengers or flight crew. The TSB has dispatched two regional investigators to the site. The weather at the time of the accident was as follows: METAR CYYC 210300Z 04007KT 1/2SM FZFG OVC004 M04/M06 A2974 RMK FG6ST2 RVR RWY34 1400 FT SLP123=

Even the "nicer" RJs suck

It's like when they put big tailpipes on a Honda, add a racing stripe and a decal for an aftermarket engine modification

It's still a damned Civic.
