Blood Pressure Question

Hi Doc,

My blood pressure is a little on the high side, but still within the FAA requirement and my doc(not FAA) and I have decided to pursue the weight loss path in order to possibly lower the BP...which I think will work...

My question centers around what happens if at some point in the future I do have to take meds for my BP....If I am still a few months from my next FAA physical, do I just start the meds and then report them on my next FAA medical or do I have to get my FAA doc involved before I start them??

Again I am just asking about procedure. I fully expect that better diet/weight loss and exercise will lower the BP...

Thanks for your time

I was on the high side, too and the AF docs were pushing meds. Lost 40 pounds and I'm normal again. In my opinion, meds are pushed way early in some circles.

Here is the link to the initial requirements for blood pressure evaluation:
http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org...e/dec_cons/disease_prot/hypertension/initial/

So if I understand it...If I have to go on BP meds I should not fly for 2 weeks when I start the meds....Then after 2 weeks if I have no side effects... then I can fly again....When my medical comes due in a few months then bring the required documentation to the AME and all should be good to go...

After the 2 weeks waiting period do I have to go back to my doc and have him evaluate me as to side effects or do I self evaluate???

Thanks Doc???
