FAA to pilots : No More Personal Wireless Devices in the Cockpit

Meh, I've read the Second and Fourth Amendments (thanks to the liberal public school system and good parenting), and can't formulate an argument for that.

Beyond the utterly deplorable intransigence of the pro-gun crowd, of course.
I picture a very South Park-esque episode...

"We have lots o' guns... but people keep getting shot!"
"We need MORE GUNS!!!"
"YEAAAAAaaaaa...."

All this being said, I own several firearms myself :)
NO!!! STOP!!!!

I proposed beheading for the next gun control comment in an unrelated thread.

If texting and driving is a bad idea, then why would someone think that texting and flying is a good idea?

I obviously meant during a critical phase of the flight, which includes ramps and taxiways. (I'm pretty sure that I read something about ground incursions, but I might be mistaken.) Not as critical is when overflying Kansas at 02:00, using PCL to light up airports and stay awake.

Yes, I'm a pilot, you knucklehead.

Hey, maybe when we get iPads we can switch MX and dispatch over to iMessage rather than using cel phones. Saves minutes, and you can see if they've "read" and are just ignoring you.....

How do you text while flying? The phones don't work at altitude. This is what I dont undestand about the FAA allowing people to make calls in flight. I mean...how?

I'm sure when you're referencing altitude you're hinting towards the FL's. But below the FL's, getting signal isn't that hard.

I've heard tat GA flying below 6000 and under 140kts can acquire a signal and hold for voice and text, as well as FB. Voice sometimes noisy.

98% of my flying is done low and slow. I've been able to get signal from 12,500 down to ground level and everything in-between. Over major metropolitan areas like L.A., I'll get full signal at 4500 and be able to use my phone as if I'm sitting on the ground.

Furthermore, during mapping missions, our Ipads can get enough signal via AT&T to use the internet (though not allowed). When we're out over the middle of nowhere, I can't get signal until we get close to an interstate or major highways with numerous towers.

When I flew cessnas, I'd pull up the nexrad through a 3g card all the time to have as on board radar, so get a plan as to avoid storms.

Probably the new FAA administrator saying "Look! I did something!"

I guess I'll ring the call button and ask one of our passengers get the updated weather at Gander as we're largely still "Teletype Technology"

Glad you got your name on a memo, bubb.

Maybe she typed the text before push back and it just didn't send until ten minutes after she's on the ramp. That's my guess.
