How is life in Yakima WA?

I am thinking of moving there if job talk ends in my favor. If I am lucky I may work for a well known light plane manufacturer. So what's good in Yakima and what's not?

My first thought is they have a lot of crime there. They have a gang problem. But I'd bet if you looked at it statistically it's probably no worse than any other town of the same size. I would imagine there are parts of town you want to watch your back. The people I know who live there like it. Not as much snow in the winter as Spokane and not as much rain as Seattle. More sun than both. Small enough you'll never have to worry about traffic jams but big enough they have a decent airport and a community college, with a major university just 30 minutes away in E-burg. Heck, if you're into the college scene, you could live in Ellensburg and drive it.

Not sure where you're from but the cost of living will be pretty low. Cheaper real estate than Spokane and far cheaper than Seattle. If you like outdoor recreation I would thing the fishing would be great with all the nearby rivers and Mt Rainer is right there.

Yakima has one of the highest crime rates in the country. There are lots of migrant farm workers. There's some mountains close by which is nice if you want to explore the outdoors.

Yakima, aka Crackima, is one of the worst overnights in the QX system for overnights.

Ellensburg is a better place to live (personally speaking), or if you wanted a little bit further drive, Wenatchee area is one of my favourties on the eastern side of the Cascades.

I wasn't impressed with Yakima when I was there, although the mexican food is very good due to the high mexican population. I wouldn't want to live there as compared to other like sized towns.

If you're going to live in a bas washington town, at least move to Tacoma where the paper mill makes the whole town smell but you get an awesome view of Mt ranier.

Yakima has a great departure procedure. It's unpublished but is usable by any operator. Just request the GET-THE-HELL-OUTA-HERE 6 departure with the SEE-YA transition (GTHOH6.CYA). The procedure is simple, fly runway heading to any altitude then turn any direction, change to any other frequency. In the event of lost communications consider yourself lucky.

Yakima...oh, right, that's on the other side of/in the middle of those mountains...right...it's a place, I guess it (like most of Eastern WA) does exist.

<- smug Des Moines kid.

Agree. Yakima itself is not much fun. But the surrounding area is my kinda place. Whale watching in the fiords of Seattle. The TV Series Northern Exposure was filmed very nearby in the town of Roslyn. Not a movie set. A real town, favorite hangout of mine. The residents would sort of step aside during filming, then move back in to their stores and businesses when filming sequences were finished. If you want to have some fun, watch some episodes. The people there are stable and sane in my opinion, just like on the show. Let me know when you arrive. I'll show you around.

I have friends and neighbors from there. Salt of the earth. I have never been there, however.

Do you live in Roslyn? My family has some land spotted around the Easton, Roslyn, E-burg and Kittitas corridor.

No. But "The Brick Tavern" is fun to hang out out. Ever been there? I was sorry to see them cut such a wide fire break around the town though, all those trees. But some are growing back. Actress Janine Turner went back recently and did this amateur video with a friend. I miss the show and the filming. I could relate to those characters. That's what the NW used to be, still is in a few small pockets. Fencer will be very happy there (if Janine is thrown in with the deal).

Funny thing is with all my time around that area I've not been. My parents always drive over the mountains for the music there. They are always talking about a mailman that plays there.
