CFI Program Closing

I called today to inquire about the CFI program and was told that they won't accept anymore CFI initial students past today! This was due to the lack of examiners they have available and the amount of career students coming through.

I'm thinking of putting the deposit down, since today is the last day and going within the next few months, but the one concern is that they told me that I HAVE to do the program in 3 weeks. I can't break it apart. Also, it has to be done all in the same location. Anyone have any insight?

I am studying up for my CFI-A (initial) and considered both ATP and Sheble's. My main consideration with Sheble's was the ability to utilize (hopefully) a DPE rather than an FAA inspector since the FAA guys must do all of the Tasks in the PTS and a DPE only needs those deemed Mandatory and one other from each area. Thus utilizing a DPE would just make things easier on little ol me.

I considered ATP for simply speed, but as I have zero interest in their MEI or CFII stuff, thats just not for me.

All in all, I think I will just grin and bear the 7 hour oral that is the typical FAA torture session. I could spend 7 hours on just the four fundamental forces of flight and still have plenty left over. :)

If you know your stuff, then it will be okay anywhere you go because wherever you are, the knowledge will be there too. :)

Sosee, where did you end up training for your CFI?

With all the drama going on out a Sheble I do not think I would plan using a DPE for CFI ride out there for some time to come if ever.

what if your are from socal? what about smo?

I gave them a call a couple weeks ago. They are still up and running. I've heard very good things about that school/location. They run one class every month. It's very educational and thorough. The only downside is it's a month long program, so it can be hard for those who can't dedicate the cash and time.

I did the CFI program at American Flyers, if you can devote the time it is worth it. Flyers actually teaches you how to teach. You get at least 4 hours a day classroom time with an instructor every day for 30 days. Its a great program and you can also do your CFII in house part 141 which is another great deal. Not to mention you might meet a movie star or 2. I met Ewan Mcgregor there back in 2008 when i took the course, really nice guy!

At SMO?

One of our pilots used to be like the chief CFI or something there.

This is wrong. The PTS does not differentiate between DPEs and FAA inspectors. Standards and requirements are the same, though any examiner, regardless of whether they are DPE or FAA inspector, may test beyond the minimum PTS tasks during the oral or ground portion, or both.

What was the reason for moving the CFI program to only the Career track? Seems like they will lose a lot of customers that way.
The reason I was given was that they're having issues scheduling CFI initial rides with the FAA inspectors. They're backlogged, pretty much. They give their career students priority, so they're not taking any new CFI-initial students. They're still offering the advanced instructor ratings, however.

I agree with you. I would think ATP is going to lose customers (revenue) and would've found a solution, but who knows.

Hopefully it is temporary and they can clear the backlog quickly.
