If there is a pilot and aircraft mechanic shortage in the near future...

I'm just hoping that the shortage of pilots would also cause a need for more aviation/airport managers, since I'm hoping to find a job in the aviation industry on the management side when I graduate from college.
Well, if there ARE going to be more pilots and mechanics, they'll need more management to screw them over.

Most of the pilots from the U.S. were flying in Vietnam then...............

Even the USAF had a serious pilot demand-vs-production problem in the 1960s:

There won't be a pilot shortage. Just ask the internet, because the internet gets everything right all the time.

Additionally, don't prep for a career that you're interested in, because you'll never be able to get the job that you want. That's why people like Autothrust Blue haven't been able to find not one, but TWO jobs in one of the worst economies in a century. Oh and don't consider networking and going to NJC every year, that's fruitless and wouldn't ever get a complete bag like DPApilot a job. And WHATEVER YOU DO, don't stay hungry, don't work your butt off, and don't try to get ahead in life because, as the internet has informed us, the end is nigh for this career.

Yup, I wish I had listened to the internet a little more, because then I'd be working at McDonalds and wouldn't have any higher education (because the ROI isn't there, right?).

Parenthetically: Every job that I've EVER had has come in the midst of this economic morass, actually - not just the aviation sector. When I worked in infosec, I was hired both private and public sector in the midst of the downturn.

As you once put it, "If you want to fly airplanes, fly airplanes." Luck has a LOT to do with where you wind up (I consider myself stupid lucky more than anything else: right place at the right time - or sometimes the right man in the wrong place at the wrong time), and a willingness to roll a hard six helps too. And avoid loan debt. For the love of GOD, avoid that stuff like the plague. My standard of living is what it is because I didn't finance my training and was lucky enough to have a lucrative enough "civilian" (read: desk) job to pay for it. Fly whatever you can get your hands on, live cheap, and keep your head up.

(and DPApilot is a complete bag too, but we like him anyway. No homo.)

How can you have a shortage when people are still applying to Republic?
Someone should do a study about loans, who has how much, and where they're working. I've got nothing but anecdotal/personal experience about coworkers who work for the House of the Reverend and were furloughed from Beagle—but almost all of them were either Riddle Rats or otherwise deep in hock for their training.

And as you should well know, any job might be better than no job, for purposes of preserving recency of experience. Although I doubt that I'd be willing to leave my second regional for a third at this point: I'd probably go get some more education in the somewhat unlikely event of a furlough.

A complete bag, huh?

Thank you!

But I don't know how well it works because I only fly a turboprop and the lavatory doesn't have a sink.....

I guess if I wasn't an ass I could have slats, turbofan engines, and a SINK!

I wish I'd gone to a cheaper school than I did, but it would have taken me years to save up for the cost of flight training. I'm paying back that debt now, but it was a tool that was necessary for me to get the job done. What were you doing that allowed you to save up that kind of money by your early 20s?

Right, because your chosen career field doesn't require higher education. You are working side by side with pilots with just a high school diploma.

Information security is a lucrative business--even in government.

You're a complete and total bag, holmes. And you're ugly. And you smell bad.

Did I mention you're ugly?

:)

I don't know about any pilot shortage, but I'm starting my 4th job in 3 years tomorrow. 1 of them thanks to this website. Never been laid off or anything. All voluntary upwards movement.
Autothrust Blue and myself both did't CFI, but did fly airplanes that take pictures. Though I do have some, but little debt.

Does anybody in this country see middle of the road anymore? Left or Right, Red or Blue, and it's even 'SUPDER DUPERRR PILOTT SHORTAGE!!!11!!' or 'No one will ever get a good pilot job again!' I'm voting for somewhere in the middle.

Regardless, since I know of no one here who is a true economist, I'm voting to keep a good attitude, keep your record clean, take a taxi from the bar, and keep filling out those ASAPs. Oh, and hand out those business cards like they're party favors because you never know what can happen.

I'm somewhat middle of the road on the long term outlook, truthfully. But I'm also trying to manage my expectations :)

Agreed, wholeheartedly.
