Logbook Software

Is there a good, cheap logbook software? I've been using Excel but it is painful to enter all of that data and format it properly. It seems like there should be a software program out there somewhere that can simply create a logbook like the paper one, but on your computer. There are cloud services but I don't need the cloud, and I certainly don't need an expensive subscription just to write down 5 columns of information. Also the logbook apps seem really expensive for just saving some data.

This is mostly a rant since I've looked all over and haven't found anything, but are there any computer programs I'm missing that can do this (cheaply)? <- poor college student.

The positive thing for Excel is it will be around for years and years to come or there will be a transition program from it as Lotus 123 transitioned into Excel. With any of the logbook programs, they might or might not be around for as long as you will need them.

Personally, I like the idea of keeping the data in Excel and on paper. Plus, scan all endorsements and save them.

I know you said you didn't need the cloud, but flightlogg.in is a great site, plus it's free. I had my IACRA/8710 filled out for my ME checkride last weekend in no time.

I like that one as well. That is what I used before I switched to Logbook Pro. I exported an excel file and Flight Log Pro read it all and put it right into their format. The only thing extra I had to do was change the approach column because it didn't like the format of that one but that was a 1 minute problem.

If you do use flightlogg.in then I would make sure to keep an updated file on hand all the time because it sucks when the site goes down.

Ya, I get the weekly backups emailed to me. Most I'd ever be out is a few flights since I'm timebuilding now...but once I'm not flying that much, it'll be a moot point.

Logbok Pro allows you to export your data formatted for Excel , HTML, CSV, or even raw text.

I would definitely recommend avoiding any eLog, whether online or installed, that doesn't have the capability to at least export to csv.

Personally, in addition to the home-grown eLog I've been using since the DOS days, I really like MyFlighBook. Online with iOS and Android apps and the ability to save an Excel spreadsheet locally that updates from the online log with a click.
