Bringing your food.. Any good recipes?

I've discovered that a giant bag of chicken breasts from costco, a big bag o' frozen veggies and a bunch of brown rice will make me at least 12-16 meals (which, right now, is about 4 days worth) that I just keep in little tupperware containers. It never occurred to me until now that what I was making is totally portable. Go figure.

Dec. 2010 to July 2012.....might be the best necropost of the year. Not that it wasn't a good thread...it's just very tired.

Gained 20 lbs during Colgan training...then lost 22 lbs in Shuttle America training...the 5 things that I went by strictly:

1. No Pop/Soda/Coke (none, not even cheating, or diet anythin)
2. No fruit juices (look at the sugar content, not all of it is naturally occuring)
3. Coffee, black or non fat milk only (no adding cream, sugar)
4. Oatmeal and fresh fruit every morning
5. eat 5-6 small meals a day

Weren't you also using a shake substitute for dinner?

I think carrying all this food around with you on a trip is insane, but as far as the nutritional aspect, I've found more than anything since I started my diet earlier this year that just keeping track of the nutritional content of what you're eating makes a big difference. Most people don't even realize what they're putting in their bodies. I was shocked when I started tracking everything to find out that I was only getting on average about 50% of the calcium I was supposed to be getting, and 70% of the protein I was supposed to be getting. And when it came to fiber, I wasn't even close. I was around 30% of the recommended fiber intake. Once I started basing my meals around trying to get those numbers in line, everything else fell into place. I wasn't eating as much, because I wasn't as hungry thanks to eating more fiber, which is generally more filling. Protein is also more filling, so getting that up to the proper number curbed my hunger. Now my diet is easy, because I'm not hungry throughout the day, even though my calorie intake is a fraction of what it used to be. If you're just assuming that your diet is nutritional without really tracking the numbers, I'd recommend actually tracking all of it for a week to see if you're right. You may be surprised.

Insane or not, I started doing it a few weeks ago, and I was shocked at the amount of money I saved so far...

No doubt. I'm sure I could save a lot of money during the winter by not running my furnace and huddling around the fireplace, too, but I sure as hell ain't gonna do it.

Well, it's not like I'm starving. Simply paying $6 for several sandwiches instead of one from Subway in the airport. In your case, you'd actually be doing without. If you could get the heat for less, wouldn't you?

Not if it meant a big hassle. Carrying around my required luggage is bad enough. Carrying around an unnecessary cooler? No thanks.
Eh, I carry the clip on bag anyway for my tablet, phone charger, etc. I just toss the food in there. It all fits. No extra luggage needed. That was my biggest complaint before. Now, it's not that big a deal since I'm bringing it anyway.

I'm schlepping around way too many bags. But, I use the contents in each, daily. I have my 22", flight case, lunch cooler, and computer bag. I would LOVE to dump the computer bag.....but as of yet, haven't figured out how to combine the contents into the others yet.

By bringing my lunch bag, I'm eating much healthier....and cheaper. By doing that and exercising regularly, I've dropped over 30 pounds in the past few months. Well worth the little aggravation of the extra bag, IMO.

I am was raised in a very health oriented family so this topic is one I feel strongly about.

I could go on all day, but let me just point out a few things.

First, eating right/healthy is not cheap. Let's just get that out of the way and deal with it. Regardless if you are doing it at home or on the road you will spend a few extra bucks keeping off those few extra pounds.
But so what? Budget for it like you would for anything else. It never ceases to amaze me when I see people dropping loads of cash on "consumer" things like extra large TVs, new cars, big McMansions in the 'burbs, etc... but when it comes to food and their health they opt for the value menu.

In our society our priorities have been flipped upside down. We don't think twice about spending money on things TV ads tell us to buy but we hesitate spending money on good nutritious food.

So start now. Budget for better food and you will see how easy it is.

A few nuggets of info to keep in mind:

Bison meat is always the best if you can find it. It is the leanest meat, even more than Chicken and Turkey. A Bison burger for example is typically around 300 calories. There is a place called U Food here in DFW airport that serves it.

Naked juices. They are sold pretty much anywhere and contain NO added sugar. Yes, they cost around 4 or 5 dollars but remember...priorities! I use them as a meal replacement/snack in between meals anyway.

AVOID SODA! I'm so happy to see so many people mention that in this thread and it deserves mentioning again. Avoid all SODAS. This actually marked a big change in my life when I was 17 and cut it out all together, and I have never looked back. I only drink water and juice. Even on my days off when at a restaurant I will order water. My only guilty pleasure is coffee, and I allow myself that. I love coffee too much and in the moderate amounts is not bad.

Watch out for those buritto places. Always get a bowl instead. Those tortillas and other breads pack on a scary amount of calories and fat. Chipotle, for example is one of my go-to places for eating healthy. I get a bowl with Chicken, rice, vegetables, salsa, and lettuce. All together it is around 300 to 400 calories.

Also avoid cheese whenever possible. This includes at Subway. AVOID chips and fries. It seems some people are incapable of ordering any kind of sandwich without having chips or fries as well. Break that bad habit. If you must have a side then get fruit. Most places offer that these days.

I used to be addicted to french fries. Couldn't order from a fast food place without getting them. I realized the other day as I walked by Wendy's in DTW....I haven't had french fries in 2-3 months, and I didn't even miss them.

I'm slowly weaning myself off soda. I can't stand coffee, so I have to feed my caffeine addicted self something or I get a splitting migraine. I'm down to about one a day, though. Will probably get that down to one every other day, etc, etc. Now, those big water bottles we've got on the plane.....I normally go through two of those a day.

I really don't understand the aversion to diet soda. I've lost 37 pounds so far, and a huge contribution to that has been switching to diet soda and sweet tea with artificial sweetener. There is absolutely zero evidence that there are negative health effects from diet soda or artificial sweeteners.

Totally agree with you.

If only there was a way to make a zero calorie beer, I would be all set!

It tastes like sewer pipes. That's why I can't drink it. :)
