20... 10.... Flare!!!! For the love of Justin Beiber FLARE!

I have an obsession over watching that youtube clip of him getting hit in the face with a plastic bottle! Haha

Hm. I can almost see what Derg is a little twitterpated.

what's the story behind that, were they trying to see how much they could stress it?

May 2, 1980. Certification test flight of the MD-80 (at that time the DC-9-80) at Edwards AFB. They were trying to demonstrate the minimum short field landing distance for Part 25 certification, and on short final to runway 22 the test pilot flying let the sink rate get too great and they touched down at 990 fpm and 125 KIAS. There were 2 test pilots, 3 flight test engineers and 2 technicians on board. One of the flight test engineers was standing up, and broke his ankle.

Here's the NTSB report: http://www.airdisaster.com/reports/ntsb/AAR82-02.pdf

I thought this was great:

Based on his previous practice on this maneuver, the pilot said that the flare required definite "...back elevator ... maybe half the available travel" of the control column. However, because he still "...had a perception of a slightly higher sink speed," he applied more back elevator force on the control column. The aircraft landed very hard,' and as a result, the nose fell through and the nose wheel tires blew out. The pilot applied reverse thrust and wheel brakes, stopped the aircraft, and then shut the engines down and secured the aircraft. After he left the aircraft, the pilot saw that the empennage had separated and was lying on the runway.

Gonna have nightmares now... thanks a lot! :D

It's comedy, dorks! :)

Sheesh, like when "The 40 Year Old Virgin" exclaims, "KELLY CLARKSON!!!" when he's getting his chest waxed.

Pilots. Geez.

Derg ...

So I was on a really early DCA to ATL flight this morning. And as we were about to touch down I snickered and muttered to myself, "flare! for the love of Justin Bieber flare!" and then snickered some more.

Woman next to me thought i was nuts. But it cracked me up.

I love it when I randomly find something in everyday airline travel funny because of some inside joke from forums or coworkers and snicker or mutter shoulder to shoulder with buisness men. Business men always know when something is array.
