Smoke in Elevator Shaft Forces Newark Airport Tower Evacuation

The FAA has issued a ground stop, causing delays for flights leaving and landing at Newark airport



Authorities have evacuated the control tower at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport because of a report of smoke in the elevator shaft.

Federal Aviation Administration deputy assistant administrator Laura Brown says air controllers are managing air traffic at an alternate site.

Glad to be poolside today while some of my coworkers are becoming best friends with gate hold and pissed off passengers! :)
 
That explains all of the holding we heard people talking about on the way up here. Nice to be in the IAD system today. :)
 
It only took about 15-20 mins and they were getting clearances to people. it was a little funny talking to departure with no transponder code. we had just got on with departure and and it was a new guy. He started bitching at us that we were sqwaking VFR to turn our transponder on. as we told him we just departed EWR. and needed it. I think his supervisor yelled at him/quickly informed him what was happening because he was very apologetic.
