Airline coffee

Maybe it's the altitude, or just the joy of flying that will make anything better but I find airline coffee to be delicious. I don't fly that often, but one thing that I look forward to is having a cup or two of the coffee. Every once and a while I'll walk into a local breakfast place and I'll get a whiff of what smells like coffee being served on an airline and the memories of fun times sitting on an airplane come rushing back. It's impossible not to smile and be happy.

I normally only fly UsAir, and I've only had their coffee, does anyone know what brand/type they serve?

Some of the worst coffee I've ever had was on board a US Air flight. The FA did warn me that it was a little sour but this was terrible.

Ha well, maybe enjoying the moment over rode my senses and I thought I enjoyed it.

Based on there site it says

Here is an interesting read about when United and Continental were merging and which coffee they decided to go with

Interesting article and thanks for the info.

Most airlines use Chicory root, not coffee... it's cheaper. Some mix it with.

none of it tastes good... must be the altitude getting to you!

Best coffee on any airline has to be Austrian Airlines.

That's because Austrians have some of the best coffee in the world. When I was in Germany, I really started drinking coffee. I can't quite replicate it back here in The States. But German coffee is freakin' awesome.

Yeah well, people I spoke with on the last flight also thought I was crazy when I said I enjoyed flying Us Air. We were delayed and then diverted, told the screens in ATC were broken in Florida and that a fire truck broke at our destination. People were complaining saying they were going to call and demand a refund or other compensation. Some people expect the world with their $150 coach seat. I just enjoyed another cup of delicious coffee ha ha.

You sure you weren't employing a survival technique I'm trying to get my wife to use?

If you set your expectations low enough, and expect everyone to screw up whatever they are doing, when they actually manage to do something right, you can be pleasantly surprised, rather than disappointed when they screw up like you knew they would.

Y'all boys need to come fly on Horizon, we brew Starbucks (flame away)...and it's quite decent...we were the first to serve Starbucks (now Alaska has followed us).

Maybe, it's the technique I employ with my wife as well! :D Doesn't always work out though.

Old Northwest coffee. Im pretty sure that stuff was actually brake dust steeped in jet fuel.... I used to use it to lean the grime off of my rollaboard wheels. I love me some coffee but I had to be REALLY desperate to actually drink the Northwest Blend. My mom , on the other hand, couldnt get enough of it.... I used to bring bags and bags of it home and she lapped it up like chocolate milk. The stuff they serve on Delta now is atually pretty palatable. Love Southwests coffee.

It's probably temperature related.

Most coffee machines dump boiling water on your coffee, which at sea level is too hot. The higher temperature probably results in overextraction of the more bitter flavours. If you are used to this, and then drink coffee brewed at a temperature closer to the optimum 200F, you'll notice a different flavour. Water will boil at about 200F at an 7000ft cabin altitude.

This sludge they call coffee on this airline is about as far from delicious and one can physically get outside of the monkey enclosure. Done. And in order.

To the OP - you can now say you are familiar with the effects of hypoxia.
