Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Within a few hours we found out we lost my step grandfather to heart failure and my wife's great grandmother to colon cancer. We both just moved to Hawaii for the job I just started in February. My job only gives me three days off for family emergencies and my wifes job is to start on wednesday. We are at such a loss as what to do.

Hang in there man. I am very sorry for your loss, and it definitely happens to the best of us. I hope you and your family will overcome this situation and be able to heal in time.

With her just starting a job, is it possible to delay the start til Monday? That would give a few days at least... and while 3 days is not much time, it's enough that you should be able to at least get there for the funeral and have enough time to get back. Certainly not a lot of time, it isn't, but it's something. :(

Sorry you're having to deal with a double loss :(

It is weird being stuck for the first time. Since the families are so large I think they will be waiting so everyone can get together. Hopefully my wife finds out more about the possibility for leaving for a week tomorrow.

My step grandpa was my inspiration of being a pilot. He flew in B-24's as a bomber became a POW. He later came home to buy a PT-19 and fly for fun. Wish I had the strength to be the man he was.

Looks like we are having to stay on the island. Some how my schedule was the complete opposite of what I bid for and the wife needs to stay for her new job. My wife's dog also died today. All we can do is laugh now.

Wow man, that's a heck of a lot to have to handle all in one day. I'm very sorry for your losses. Things you cannot control may prevent you from travelling, but dont overlook the value of taking time to mourn and remember with your wife.

My wife just lost another family member to a plane crash in Utah today. I think it is time to cut our losses and leave the island. This just doesn't work. :(

I know it's hard, but don't make a rash decision to leave based on the instant emotional response to events like this. Do you have jobs lined up if you did leave? Do you have a clear plan as far as a place to live, etc?

Not trying to minimize your loss by any means, it's hard to go through, but don't make rash decisions of such impact without really thinking it through...

Cut your losses? As in quit the jobs? Then do what?

It's not like being on the island had anything to do with the various losses, is it?

No, but it makes me rethink being isolated on an island from family. There is nothing keeping us here. We can get an early start on our other ventures we have been wanting to do.

If thats what you want to do and have thought it through for yourself, then go for it. Have to do what's best for the both of you.

Sorry for the continuous spillage of my life but lately this is about the only place I have an outlet outside of family. The chief sent me a message that I am on track to upgrade in the next few months. My wife and I are going to really stick together to make it through.

Some people just vent about their personal details all over the net to people they don't necessarily know. Others don't.

Stick together?

Sometimes we all have to make tough decisions. I never thought I would be where I'm at right now in life, but I look to the future and I see myself happier with the tough way and struggling sticking to the old easy way. I'm glad to hear you're tuffing it out. In the long run its should benefit you.

Is that even legal? Is FMLA not a federal law?
I'm pretty sure FMLA only kicks in after a year.
dol.gov said:
Employees are eligible for leave if they have worked for their employer at least 12 months, at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and work at a location where the company employs 50 or more employees within 75 miles. Whether an employee has worked the minimum 1,250 hours of service is determined according to FLSA principles for determining compensable hours or work.
Additionally, for Flight Crew:
On December 21, 2009, the President signed into law the Airline Flight Crew Technical Corrections Act, Public Law 111-119, amending section 101(2) of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). This amendment to the FMLA establishes a special hours of service eligibility requirement for airline flight attendants and flight crew members. Airline flight attendants and flight crew members continue to be subject to the FMLA’s other eligibility requirements.

The amendment provides that an airline flight attendant or flight crew member meets the hours of service requirement if, during the previous 12-month period, he or she (1) has worked or been paid for not less than 60 percent of the applicable total monthly guarantee (or its equivalent), and (2) has worked or been paid for not less than 504 hours, not including personal commute time, or time spent on vacation, medical, or sick leave.
