Hey Guys! I have been off these forums for a long time but I am back lol I recently earned by Instrument Ground Instructor License by passing by FOI & IGI Written Exam and wondering if the FAA keeps a pass/fail rate on instructors who give signoffs for FAA written exams? the same way they do for checkrides

Any answers on topic would be helpful
Thanks

While you're supposed to keep a record, I don't believe the faa has any methods of doing so.

With a checkride there are 8710s and/or IACRA; however with the written test it's only your endorsement and the faa doesn't keep copies of student logbooks and therefore has no way of keeping track of who signed them off. Now if the faa felt something was amiss at a part 141 school or student reported you as sucking, I bet a little investigating could come up with a record of pass/fail.

I don't think they track your written sign-offs. But you are required to keep your records for the last 3 years.

A ground instructor doesn't have to keep records. 61.189 mentions flight instructor records but there is no equivalent within 61.211 - 61.217. I think it is certainly good practice to keep a record, but the regs don't explicitly state it like they do for CFIs

Thanks! Good to know, I have my IGI only as a way to get my gold seal...

Yeah I don't believe ground instructors need to keep records. 61.189 says nothing about ground instructors. If you are a CFI and sign off applicants to take their knowledge tests it might be better to use your AGI or IGI. Less record keeping and possible hassle later down the line.

I have a question related to the IGI and FOI. If you get your IGI/AGI does that keep your FOI test results valid forever to get the CFI?

No, they don't. However, it is so easy to pretest people for a knowledge test (written test) that failures should be very few and far between. Flight checks can have all kinds of variables that instructors may not anticipate, but with the exception of the FAA suddenly changing the database, the knowledge tests are very predictable.

Yes and no. If you get ANY ground instructor certificate, you will no longer need the FOI test results. When you apply for a flight instructor certificate, you need only show your FIA (Flight Instructor Airplane, or applicable category) test results and your ground instructor certificate.

Reference 14 CFR 61.183(e)

(e) Pass a knowledge test on the areas listed in § 61.185(a)(1) of this part, unless the applicant:
(1) Holds a flight instructor certificate or ground instructor certificate issued under this part;
(2) Holds a teacher's certificate issued by a State, county, city, or municipality that authorizes the person to teach at an educational level of the 7th grade or higher; or
(3) Is employed as a teacher at an accredited college or university.
