Today was my first flight in the PCC/HAI 141 program out of TTD. I have confirmed that I have the Bug. Hopefully this is a start of a great thing! I know there will be tough times but I can't resist this awesome opportunity!!

Nice! TTD is a pretty fun airport though I've heard it's been pretty busy... Be sure to make your CFI take you into Fly 4 Fun, just for fun. :P

Yea it is pretty busy with the foreign training program and all. TTD also lies beneath PDX airspace so their departure procedures are pretty strict. I think it is a good thing to build that awareness right off the bat though vs later on in training. We actually did three touch and goes on RW 10L at PDX, that was a rush for me! The weather here is still harsh. I had to cancel lesson 2 this morning due to low visibility and high crosswinds. what is fly 4 fun by the way?

Yea, weather there can be pretty lame. If it's not the low visibility, it's the strong 30kt+ winds. Just get to know the area a bit and you'll be fine. Departure procedures there aren't too bad. If you forget the name or what the landmark is, just tell them where you're at in relation to the airport and they'll catch on. Just don't bust into the class C above you... I still don't know where "community college" is. Ha! Fly for Fun

I fly into pdx every day, and I have no clue where the mall is from the air... or where some of the other landmarks they want us to fly to or around on the visual. Just BTG then direct airport from the north, or over the antenna farm from the south, good nuff.

Sorry for going off topic.
Would it be possible to post a how for the process of going to school with GI bill.

How long is the total course? I see that its 7 terms
Is it 100% covered?
BAH?
Residency, im a NY resident b/c thats where i enlisted but i own a house in cali. just wondering if you could give me an idea if this would be possible for me to attend.
Any other info be good.

I have 3 years of active and 2 years left, i have a BS:IT network administration. So im sure that i could xfer the gen edd credits.

Yeah, I am still trying to figure out all the visuals and procedures. I know there is the prune hill departure, Lackamas Lake, Happy Valley, and Boring. we also report when we are at College (MHCC Dome), Micro Chip plant, North Bank, and Green Mountain. I just wish the weather here would clear up some. I am sitting at 14 hrs waiting for solo before I start xc training.

That is correct, there are seven terms. It is 100% covered through the VA (including flight fees at HAI). Now you can go all year around which will take you about 18 months, or have summers off which will take two years + one term. With that being said, I do not recommend taking summers off as it is the premium time to fly here in the NW, VFR anyway. I am figuring out that weather here is hit or miss even this late in the spring term. Weather has caused many cancellations thus far in the spring term. With your prior degree you will have a good amount of transferable credits, however that may hurt you in the aspect of attending full time. You usually need to take a gen ed class on top of flight+ground to maintain full time to get full BAH (1300 per month). The VA only covers classes that are towards your degree, so if you already have all your gen ed you will not be able to take an abundance of classes outside the degree plan. I am not sure how out of state tuition would affect you here at PCC, contact the VA reps there they are very helpful if you can get in contact with them.

I was able to take advantage of the great weather and solo for the first time last friday, even though the storm blowing by prolonged the event. I have a question for those of you out there that are reading and can relate or offer advice. Tomorrow is my first solo where I will be leaving the vicinity of the airport and will be tracking about 10-15 miles north, then track back to the airport for some touch and go's. I am still nervous when I fly and even more when I am solo. Is that normal? I feel that I am a safe student pilot, it is just the thought of messing up or a situation happening where I am not sure what to do. I have studied for hours and my CFI says I am doing fine, he is constantly offering constructive criticism which I like. I just feel like I not performing well and the multitasking is kicking my rear. When does it seem to all come together? I know that answer varies from person to person, I just hope I am not alone in the somewhat self-doubt during training. I have asked my CFI these kind of questions and he says I should just relax and have fun, and to stop being so hard on myself. So I guess I am just looking for a general opinion on this matter.

Nervous is a normal reaction to an environment that is new to you, so there's that. It's normal.

Your instructor would not let you run around alone unless he thought you were capable of handling situations normal and abnormal that might occur in your training environment. That's probably the biggest vote of confidence you can get.

Thank you! Yeah Sean is my CFI, he is pretty intelligent and always pushes me, which I like. I am not sure if I remember, were you the pilot that was there the day I solo'ed?

I have the exact same experience. My instructor always comments on the fact that I over-analyze and over-think situations; It's definitely a lot to take in during the early stages though!

I actually lost the enjoyment factor of flight training in the early stages due to the fact that most of my time was spent literally worrying about ATC, flying the plane and making sure I wasn't breaching safety but after you start getting the hang of it, the enjoyment factor comes back.

Good luck and wish you all the best.

Yep that was me..

Right on, yeah that was a big day for me! the weather threw a curve ball at me with the hail storm, but that is what flying in the NW is all about i guess. I am having a great time so far in training. A very humbling experience thus far as it has given me more trouble than expected, but still fun none the less.

Today was my first solo cross country. I was 2/3 excited and 1/3 nervous as I only flew two cross countries with my CFI previously. I passed my prog check yesterday and did not want to wait long so I took advantage of the beautiful weather and knocked it out today. I have to say that I have a great deal of respect to controllers that keep us safe up there, thank you to all out there who have to deal with student pilots such as myself shaking our words through ATC...:) Next step, night flights!!!

Just thought I would update my flight training with everyone. I am towards the end of my instrument training, two cross countries and partial panel approaches. Then it will be time for end of course and checkride! Flying in Oregon is great when able to fly in IMC, nothing like logging actual in training!!
