3rd class medical after cancer

After a bout with cancer in January 2012 where I had my left kidney and adrenal gland removed (stage 2) I decided it's about time to work on my bucket list and get a private pilot license! I'm 46 in great physical condition (still can't do situps yet). What are rules concerning my condition? Any chance of obtaining a 3rd class medical?

After one year, provide all of the medical records as well as documentation there is no recurrence and they will consider you for a special issuance.
