Approach Question

So i'm a little confused. Please reference the KHTO GPS Y or Z approach. I a coming from the NW. I am told proceed direct MATHW, cleared for the approach. I asked the controller if she expects us to do the turn at MATHW and she said no, proceed straight in on the approach. Is/Was this legal? I was not being vectored, I don't see noPT, and she didn't say proceed straight in until after I queried her.

So what am I missing here.

Granted, it's a HILO so the hold is supposed to be there; but you had a question, you queried and were given an answer. If you desired to still hold, make it known. No other traffic around or behind you?

Suppose I didn't ask ATC. I would have assumed I would take a lap around the track. Would I have been in the wrong?

No, it's a HILO, you would've been right. Do a search on some of the HILO threads here, as this question has been attacked any number of times here, with good answers.

Still, if you look at, for example the TACAN 11L at KTUS. I can be told "proceed direct LIPTE, cleared TACAN 11L", upon radar contact with TRACON, but if I make a holding turn at LIPTE, Ill have my ass handed to me quickly for jamming up the arrivals coming down the pike. Best to query ATC.

She probably gave you the direct has a radar vector. She should have said turn right heading *** direct MATHW when able cleared for the approach.
