"I'm not interested in the airlines"

My dad flew for the airlines and his best friend flew corporate. I grew up wanting to do what Uncle Ray did. It has worked for me but it is not for everyone.
 
I decided to leave flying a career after hitting the jackpot and getting hired with a certain employer ( think varsity flying). I saw the people that were leaving, some for the airlines, other for corporate, starting out at the bottom again.

I realized I did not want to do that (I'm 23 now) so I left, many thought I was stupid, but it was a decision I had to make. For my flying was the supposed to be the ultimate career but I realized that what you do is not who you are. I hated being away and can't even imagine what being away for 3-4 days when you have young children feels like. I saw how many people were working a regular 9-5 or even 7-6 and didn't mind it.

Yes flying is awesome but to some it's just not worth it. I would jump on the opportunity with a local corporate gig but the airline lifestyle has faded for me, along with a lot of other pilots.

Oh and a lot of people think that airline pilots get paid really low, 80% of the people I've talked to think that starting pilots make 18k a year (after Colgan 3407 and the bad press).
 
I will go to airlines when they pay more and start to respect people.
In europe you make only 600 euro a month and everybody bitch on pprune....
the best is to be a flight instructor in a small/medium school, cargo, or 135 on business jet...

Define airlines as my buds with say Southwest or FEDEX get paid very well and love the company's.
 
I started out not wanting a thing to do with the airlines. After 4 years of flying in Alaska the safe and boring aspect of the airlines is getting to be appealing. If I could only make the move to an airline that would let me stay in AK. I'm not complaining about my job/s. I fly a Navajo year round and get to work part time in the summers flying a Turbine Beaver. I get great pay for what I do and I have 15 days a month off. Sometimes it just bugs me that I know so many people that have wrecked airplanes. The airlines aren't all bad.

Part of the reason why I left - that and no ability to get multi time easy. After a good friend got it, some of the fun of flying up north went away. I miss it every day. Now with a kid on the way, I'm considering heading back up for that schedule. The lower 48 is easy, safe, and occasionally fun -of but I have still yet to get the respect I had up north, or the camaraderie with my peers. The only problem with flying up north is it doesnt transfer to equivalent pay down south. If/when I head back up north, it'll probably be to stay.
