Good afternoon, all. I am brand new to the forum (though I have been trolling for a few weeks) and just thought I'd say hello.

I am currently active duty Navy and fly as an aircrewman in the C-40A (737-700). Tomorrow I start my PPL with a local school. My goal is to earn as many ratings as I can while I'm still on AD so I can build hours and fly professionally when the time comes, my choice or not, to get out.

Any advice or encouragement you could provide to a new aviator would be greatly appreciated. I have zero hours in light aircraft, but am not nervous about that at all. I'd be curious to hear what people thought the hardest part of their training was. Thanks in advance and have a good one.

Welcome! Our situations are a little similar. (Currently Navy... want to fly professionally.) Your first flight at the controls will be something you'll never forget. I tried to do the FBO route while on AD but I wasn't thrilled with the flight school in my area, so I decided to get everything done after AD. (At the end of this year... can't come soon enough!) Do you have your degree yet?

No, unfortunately I do not have my degree. I am very close to completing my associates though. I plan to use TA to get that finished up and my GI bill while still on AD to achieve other ratings so I can begin to build hours and make myself marketable outside the Navy. I don't really care what I fly, I just want to make money doing it.

Which squadron? I didn't know AD flew C-40's, thought only SELRES and FTS flew C-40's. I flew C-2A's in the fleet, flew with many aircrewman, my favorite sailors!

I am with VR-59 in Fort Worth, TX. You are correct that only FTS and SELRES fly the C-40. I am FTS. We consider ourselves active duty and for the general layman purposes we just AD. Most people don't know the difference. One of my past supervisors was a C-2 crewman. Small Navy.

Who was the crewman? I flew with 59 about 6 years ago, great airplanes!

His name was Scott Kidd. When they decided to combine everyone into the AW rates he stayed AM.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Tomorrow morning can't come soon enough!

Welcome to the forum Brian. If you have any questions during your training, don't hesitate to ask!

Welcome!

Hardest part of training was keeping the stupid grin off my face, it is so much fun. Enjoy! Be sure to do some pleasure flying, dont be all business.

Well, today was a success!!!!!!!!!!! 1.1 hours down and a minimum of 38.9 to go! LOL

15kt crosswinds are a pretty good time. I learned a ton and have my next lesson scheduled for Monday. Can't wait!
