F-16s intercept unauthorized small plane....

"Long Beach ground, Cessna off the runway, ready for taxi to parking."
"Cessna, taxi to parking via....ah...never mind. You're already at parking. Monitor police scanner frequency."

It begs the question. After the kill, do you or do you not do the "I'm ChasenSFO doing the 'Top Gun' double hi/lo five thing"? :)
I'd be scared there'd be more to it than "flipping the bird" in that case.

I'm kinda curious about how slow the Viper can go too. I've seen the Thunderbirds get those things looking like they're standing still.

My guess would be somewhere around 100 kts indicated.....that is purely speculation on my part though

I watched the AOPA video and now understand how one would be "intercepted". However, I am still curious as to what Vs and Vso are for a standard F16. Is this classified or something? Why does no one ever want to answer that question?

Not classified at all. I just don't fly F-16s, so I can't give you a specific, accurate answer. I flew the real mission of Attack, not Fighter, after all. :)

It's probably what /AMG said...around 100 or so dirty and with a good AOA going.

Understatement.

I bet the police interaction went something like "Bro, its oregano chill out man".
LOL (That was my brother's excuse when I found a bag of "oregano" under his bed. The sad thing is my parents almost bought it.)

My apologies as I did not see AMG's response. Thanks for the info.

Edit to add: I did also try to google the answer but did not find anything concrete or even in the ballpark.

Nope. They're escorting.....just from a position of energy advantage at all times.

Another serious question: Is there ever a time that an F-16 doesn't have an energy advantage, or could have one in a matter of a few seconds?

Flying dirty and trying to stay on the wing of a slow mover just isn't conducive to safety or energy management, as well as there being no real need for it, with the exception of some emergencies maybe. I have seen F-4s dirtied up and flying alongside such aircraft as PA-32Rs and Navion's and such, but they're hanging on in doing so. F-16s, etc, are far more suited to intercepting business jets or turboprops and larger, such as Payne Stewart's Lear 35.

Plus, for an aircraft that's truly an unknown, you want to stay in a place where weapons employment can be successfully brought to bear quickly, if it ever came to that.
