What would you do?

I don't know if you work for the FAA, but you write like it.

What I wrote is exactly how I deal with FAA inspectors. Luckily, in what was 9 years of almost daily interactions, I ran across one jerk.

I spell better than that.

There are jerks in every job and I'd say your experience is about normal. I too have run into a couple jerk inspectors in my time. For the most part, I think the best approach is to follow Chris Rock's advice about dealing with police officers, "be polite". I'm the ultimate mild mannered safe and polite driver, but I've had a couple experiences with police officers where their behavior was unreasonable by anyone's standards. But, I cannot think of a single instance that would have had a better outcome had I not been polite and respectful.

I have seen a change in the FAA over the years. The rouge inspector is pretty much a thing of the past but, we're still dealing with humans, so nothing is ever without flaw.

I figure the day when individual FSDOs get standardized will likely be the day when the individual inspectors do same.

I don't disagree with a word you write. I am polite with the inspectors, and the one jerk I diffused. However, that was an odd situation.

The only reason I suggested that you work for the feds is the phraseology you use. Reads like something that would come from an inspector. ;)

Being rogue is different than not being standardized. Standardization is a matter of establishing norms, procedures, policies, and a common interpretation of governing rules. Being rogue is a unilateral divergence from the standard. However, there is a single procedure to deal with both of those situations if you perceive them to exist.

The following web site can be used to report problems of any kind within Flight Standards. (Note that Flight Standards does not include things like medical and air traffic control.) Although it is more effective if you include your information so you can be contacted for additional information, you can submit the form anonymously if you desire.
