Private F-5B Supersonic Flight?

Hmph. I'm no physics guy here, I just try to look at it from a view like:

If I have a gun that shoots a bullet at 500mph, but I strap that gun to a jet that is flying 500mph and pull the trigger, theoretically the bullet will be traveling 1,000mph. No? I just applied that same logic to the laser question, but I guess that doesn't work for speed of light?

Concept is that photons enter and exit existence at the speed of light. They experience no acceleration, they simply are. Since they don't accelerate, then their speed must be a universal concept. Problem is, we just assume that. We've found a few particles that seem to go faster, at least in tests. However, since that is as fast as you can go, if you were to turn a laser on at the speed of light, point it forward and no photons come out. Point it back and the photons come out at the speed of light, have an absolute speed of 0 for one moment then move at the speed of light. Next big question, if the photon is moving at 0 absolute, when it's traveling which direction does it travel? It has no acceleration, what vector would it go off at? Does it still exist?

Yeah, physics can pick the brain.

Now back to the original, yeah, our planet is going fast. Our relative speed though is slow, and we love seeing things speed by us. It's an addiction, and I always think of this movie when I think of the need for speed.

This is the same question and answer as airspeed vs ground speed. If I'm walking up the aisle of an airplane am I going faster than the plane? Ground speed yes, airspeed, no.

Actually if it were possible to fire the gun while traveling at 500mph, you would pass the bullet soon after it left the barrel as it would begin to slow due to friction and you would maintain your speed.

If you could get cleared to operate in one of the various offshore warning areas, or one of the several supersonic corridors in the restricted airspace system, I don't see why not. We did it all the time in the W291 and R2301W, as well as the W72 now that I'm out east.

No need to get cleared into a warning area, but if you get a hole poked in your airplane because they were practicing live fire, well, we "warned" you.

Yeah if you are going to bust a warning area, don't have it be the pt mugu/vandenberg or tyndall ranges :)

No doubt. Maybe about a year ago, I was listening to 121.5, and they were in the middle of a live fire excercise, and a guy came pounding through in a 182, and created a crap storm. He basically told the controller to get bent, agitated a bunch of people and put the excercise on hold for a while. All I was thinking was "what a tool bag. Thanks for costing the tax payers a bunch more money in fuel!" I wanted to reach through the radio and smack the guy for everyone involved.

For civil ops, these are covered in 14 CFR 91.817, 819, and 821.

Military-wise, we had designated areas to do them, and had to log them in a "sonic boom log" back at base.

I've only had to fill out a boom log when I hit the number outside of designated airspace.

How many times did you go super in the Hog, anyway? heh heh

Haha!.....remember, I flew some of the last A-model -38s as a CTP bird, post-Hogs. :)

Someone in El Paso had one but the last time I saw it fly was probably '09. Also knew a DE who had a gig flying someone's F-5 to air shows. Had no fighter experience, but the owner liked him, paid for his check out and for him to fly it to the air shows.

I'm in for $20 if we can paint it like a Top Gun mig ...
