"Flight Number...Lima"

It's one of those, asking the controller handing this plane off

"What's his callsign?"

"Flying Olive"

"Ha, right... no seriously..."

Because at least where I work we have a off and on game of making up callsigns for "new" operators we haven't seen.

We managed to get one of our female controllers with CLS which is "Aristo" when she asked we told her "Cialis"

As in the Erectile dysfunction medication... well apparently she never heard of it... and the flight crew being foreign must have thought she was saying " C L S" That went on for about 30 minutes or so, after several controllers asking her "Is Cialis having a hard time with the ride?" and other various subtle hints she clicked in...

Classic! I almost spat a half-chewed hot dog all over my laptop screen! :)

A guy in TPA one day had "Delta nineteen-fourteen", "Delta fourteen-nineteen", "Delta nineteen-nineteen" and "Delta fourteen-fourteen" all in the final box at the same time.

Imaging the circus music playing while a dozen clowns get out of the same little car and run all around the place.

It was a riot... but not for him.
On my way into ATL yesterday, DAL 720, 750 and 760 were all on frequency at once.

I agree, it's a pain in the butt when even our own airline has two flights in the same airspace with similar call signs.

I had a similar issue years ago when Cessna registered all of their Cessna 150s with the same first three numbers (714 I think) and then different letters at the end. Someone told me it was done in an effort to honor the birth of Clyde Cessna. The problem was that at a busy flight training area with a lot of "new" Cessna 150s, there could be a whole lot of similar call signs in the same vicinity.

Continental-United?

With a lot of the domestic haul done by Connection (Delta) and Express (United), I'm sure you get similar sounding Skywest call signs bunches too.

Yea sorry... typo.

We don't get many skywest flights here.... the worst one was the USAir callsign change to Cactus... was brutal

There was much consternation over 123.45 after the change.

"Someone" keyed the mic and said, "Well, Parker did buy the airline!"

For two weeks it was:

"Uuuuactus 253"
"USAirrr ahhh...ummm US... Cactus"

"Hey Boston I got two Cactuses over here..."
"You mean Cacti"
"What?"
"Cacti, plural for Cactus"
"Thanks, so anyway... you know I think you can say Cactuses too"
"Well whatever we're calling them you better move one of em"

Nice!

I wonder if the pilots that have some strange need to use the possessive form of their callsign ever adjusted. IE from "Ewesssssaair's 421" to "Cactus's 421"

Doesn't flow the same!

Not like Deltas Two Eleven Heavy

"Center Deltas two eeeeeleven... ahh Heavy flight level three five zeeeroo"
"Delta two eleven Center good day"
"And we're heavy center!"
"That's fantastic me too"

I heard a KAL super not say "super" for the first time the other day -- couldn't believe it. Usually they fall all over themselves to make sure we know they're a super.

You know what's sad? Even after having an entire month off, I read that and thought, "211 Heavy, that'll be me in another week when I fly back from PRG!" :)

I'm flying 70 tomorrow and shortcuts are appreciated! :)

I rarely say heavy, largely because I don't remember on initial checkin.

You only have to use "heavy" with GRD/TWR and APP/DEP.

On a more personal note: HOW IN THE HOLY NAME OF DELICIOUS SIZZLING BACON ARE YOU GETTING INTERNATIONAL TRIPS!!!????

Gotta love military AFKAI callsigns... Best one I've had so far was AHULL 11. Of course, you can imagine that is sounded lot like "• 11"

Made it clear across the country, with controllers clearly laughing in the background... Until we got to NY center. Checked in with female controller, again with laughing in the background. About 30 secs later, the male supervisor stepped in to tell us that we would have to change our callsign to either Blue or Grey.

Without missing a beat, the Aircraft Commander calmly explained the computerized AFKAI system and stated, "We also plan on Air Refueling tonight, and the tanker is going to be looking for an AHULL to plug..."

Center was quiet after that...

He's better than you?
