Any regionals making the call?

I'll take you up on that. It hurts me that applied myself to make myself marketable to airlines (upgrading on the hard airplane, going to job fairs and applying myself) and then not getting even a "thanks but no thanks letter". Only to hear a chief pilots son getting a 76 job with legacy without pic.

I'm the kind of guy that is really shy and never ask anyone for recs because I don't want to put them in a tough spot. So thanks for making that offer, I will take you up on it.

Same goes for people that want into skywest, I will try my best to get you noticed. Sometimes that is all it takes, Just to be put on too of the stack of 1000 apps.

I'm here home skillet!

Come to C5. I've been here for 5 months, and I'm already 1/3 of the way up the seniority list. Or you could go to ExpressJet or Skywest and make more $$$ and sit reserve longer. :ooh:

The best way to look at it is... If the music stops, will I be ok getting stuck here? Skywest is barely in that category, even though I think they are the best regional out there. Commutair? No freaking WAY would I want to be stuck there if hiring stopped.

Interesting idea... New question.

If you were NEVER going to move on what regional would you choose and why? Any takers? :-)

Here is an update as to what's going on for sure right now at ExpressJet Airlines:

On the ERJ side, the company was able to extend 14 aircraft for an additional 3 years that were scheduled to leave in April of this year. Also, coming April we are bringing 5 ERJ135s back into service.

On the the CRJ side, we have parked 6 CRJ-200s which resulted in a displacement bid in ATL and some vacancies in IAD. We are still slated to lose 8 CRJ-700s to GoJet, of which 2 have already left this month, the rest are suppose to leave around April.

As far as hiring goes, it's all on the ERJ side right now. The 400-700+ new hires this year is all rumors and crew room gossip, but here are the actual numbers for the next few months...

- 64 new-hires in January and 48 new-hires/each for February and March. About 80 Captain upgrades in the first quarter of this year.

Again, this is all on the ERJ side. The bases for those are ORD, EWR, CLE, and IAH. Nothing happening on the CRJ side for now, but the bases for those are ATL, IAD and DTW.

Questions? Ask!

600 is the consistent number Ive heard from various people within the company. Chicago is growing like a wildfire. they are throwing 135 on there to try to keep up. And the bases are all over the board each new hire class gets assigned to a different base right now. the class before mine was ord. mine was cle and ewr. the class behind me i think was ewr and ord. ive been on the line since Nov. and am real close to a relief line in ewr. so the C5 argument is false. over all the time to hold lines in ORD and EWR are the quickest. CLE and IAH are really overloaded.

I do. The top pay listed for Xjet is $87300/YR. Skywest $99,000. So why would someone spend 10 years or so (half way to top pay) with a regional to loose their seniority and start fresh with a major? I am guessing that more than half of the regional pilots move on. Do most of the guys and gals that move on hold a captain slot with their regional before they can move on or are folks moving before getting that far?

Disclaimer: I just started seriously looking at the regionals in the last month or so.

Because XJT's contract only goes for another 9 years, and you have no idea if the company will even exist after that point in time, that's why you move on.

Also, getting hired at a company like Delta will mean you're back to making as much, if not more, than you were at the top of the pay scale at any regional by year 2.

Its a gamble either way in my mind. I mean with the major you are #3 in line for furlough after 2 years as well. Ok maybe... #6 but still. It's all a gamble. Is regional life that bad once you've put some time in? Are my chances of getting furloughed with the major just as high as the chances of lets say Skywest going bankrupt?

I wouldn't be comfortable trying to carve a career out from X until 65 as a subcontractor! :) If the name of the side of the jet isn't the name that's emblazoned across my W-2, it's "at risk" flying.

Short to medium term, sure, knock yourself out. However the industry seems to restructure itself every decade or so; Personally I suggest positioning yourself to move up the food chain (MLB) and expecting to carve out a AAA career.

I had heard from the SkyWest recruiter that the interview process is being suspended for Feb and March and will resume in April. This was at a job fair this past Saturday.

He did say that they were looking to expand their US Airways deal quite a bit this year to help offset any possible flak from the Unical merger and scope issues that may arise.

That being said, I'll send a PM your way here in a bit skyw.

I just got an email today saying the same thing. I was really hoping that Skywest would be hiring so I could have a chance of being on reserve near where I live. Looks like I will be commuting if I end up flying at all. I thought things would move a little quicker than they have. There is no way I can get my foot in some where else and then bail to go to work for Skywest and there is no way that I can sit back and not work till April.

On the brighter side the city of Lakewood is looking for police officers and emailed me :-) Maybe it's time for me to take a hint...

Just got back from a fltops.com job fair. Companies there:

Compass
GoJet
ExpressJet
SkyWest
Cape Air
Airnet

Speaking of that, why I always tell guys to talk about their goals is that I have a really good friend from college who is on the hiring board who occasionally asks me if I know anyone interested.

But if I knew anyone that every said, "Hey Doug, I know you work for Southernjets, but I really want to work for Jetblue", they could have gotten some traction if we had built a professional connection.

Why people keep their career goals a well-hidden secret, I have no idea.

You're right man, they're not going to come find you. Opportunity does not knock. Sometimes it's in the seat right behind you at Starbucks.

Truer words could not be said- I met some very important people to network with, at some very non-aviation events. One was at a Christmas midnight mass to play violin, one was at a Broadway post-audition party. Totally per-chance, unexpected. I'm hoping to stay in touch with these guys!

Now of course, being that this is a public forum, I'm hesitant to write about "where" I want to go next- as I'm sure the naysayers on the board would be very quick to shoot me down. "You want to go where? Get in line, buddy..." Interestingly enough, the similar thing happens in conservatories. "You want to play the Beethoven violin concerto for our final concert? But there are guys in line to play that, that have way more experience than you do?" Networking: It will bridge the gap between your experience, and where you want to be.
