pilot shortage scam or real?

I'm logging SIC time on your Metro right this very minute. And I'm paying to sit in that seat from Phoenix. Not to mention my flaps/flare landing technique. I'm way ahead of the curve.

We have a pilot with the company that has probably about 10k in the metro. He keeps trying to sell me his logbooks. I'll let him know I found a buyer, with just a slight finders fee of course.

If you're in this 'cause you like it super...if you're in this for money, I suspect disappointment will haunt you for life!

Some more contrast..

I'd be out of med school and have my own practice, had I gone to med school.

I'm a 5th year FO at my 2nd airline barely making $40,000 staring down a possible bankruptcy and 3 year upgrade..
Wait, but Jtrain told me it's all rainbows and sunshine? He'd never exaggerate to try and prove his point, would he?
In fairness to the "runaway Train", I don't work a ton (especially winter when my side business starts up) but I do pick up open time some months and watch my paychecks close (almost 500 this year from accounting mistakes) and I'm over $50k with per diem. Most months I'm 14 days off or better, i'd cautiously say 10 months of the year were between 14-17 days off.

A three day trip in open time (or cutting apart a 4 day to make a 3 day) will net you about $1450 with perdiem $1330 without. Shoot for 21 days off, even if you get 18 a 3 day knocks you back to 15. Keep in mind I live in base so, commuters like Tram will less flexibility. Just another contrasting opinion, YMMV.

Yeh, I don't pick up open time or anything other than what's on my schedule.
Completely understand man, I figured as much. Besides, if you can pour yourself into your side business that may pay off a lot more than a 1450 dollar 3 day.

Agreed. Its not that bad.

I never pick anything up and I am surprised that my taxable income is north of 50k as a permanent rj fo. The best part is my TAFB for 2011 is under 1700 hours. I actually would consider doing this for the next 30 years except that airlines come and go and there are no guarantees , so I will move on and try to become a real airline pilot if I ever get the chance.

That's unlikely.

:)

I've been reading these forums forever and I've seen this thread like 1000 times. I'll tell you why I think there will be some type of "pilot shortage"

1. There simply is not as many people wanting to be pilots.
With the continually reduced pay and increased training costs, more and more people are not looking for this career.
2. The number of Commercial pilot certificates issued to AMERICAN pilots has declined every single year. I taught Chinese nationals and I can tell you that the FAA numbers for commercial pilot certificates has a significantly large number of Issuance to Chinese pilots.
3. Financing: what bank is financing a 60k-120k loan for. Job that pays 18k? There are university options but those are limited options.
4. Retirements: This will be one of the largest contributors in pilot hiring. The projected numbers for the next 10 years is significant.
5. 1500 hour rule: although there are some "advanced training " type loop holes in the law the fact is that for most people the mins will be much higher than they are now.
6. Capacity: even if the regionals are taking more mainline flying the fact is that the majors have done a good job in controlling capacity these last few years. It is no secret that the economy has never been worse. so the fact that airlines are still hiring in a down economy should say something. I'm not talking about mainline jobs here. But we are hiring with no growth and a crap economy. What happes when the economy improves? Just like anything else, pent up demand is not just for commercial goods. It will also Improve travel demand.
7. Foreign Airlines: growth internationally will see a huge need for pilots in the coming years. The increased pay potential will lure at least a few people to give up the dream of an US mainline job to be an ex Pat. It's happening already. Just flew with a captain last week who is going to China flying a airbus making $18,500 per month.

8. Supply and demand. In the past the supply of pilots was always more than the demand. As long as that continues there will never be a shortage. With that said where are these pilots going to come from? ATP, Riddle, UND? There is no zero to hero here guys. It's zero to 2 years flight instructing if not more. Where are these flight instructors going to get students?

I realize that there are variables like oil, economy, recession, but for most people to just blindly say that it is not even possible? Just imagine for a second that it's not Kit Darby trying to sell you something:)

Face facts: You're a peon. The notion that the world revolves around your abilities, let alone your desires, is in the most literal sense, retarded. Do you really think that we "can't" go down the same road the Euros did 30 years ago? It's wage slavery for the future "Pylots" and the dole for the rest of us. The bottom line rules, and expecting to have children you can afford to send to college does not jibe with the Bottom Line. The sooner we Face the fact that we're living in Feudalism, the sooner the worm turns and we murder our Betters. That's the only future there is.

Obsess much? :)

You better get this revolution started. My lever action .45-70 is itchin'

Is that it? Oh man, you're going to be Zombie Chow off the bat!
Lol, I'd hold off your judgments until you've seen me shoot. I plan to not even have to shoot the Zombies, just run over them on my way out of town. Please see my Zombie Tactics section in the Zombie Survival Handbook last updated 2011. My pen name is L. Ron Monkey.

Protip: You don't have to outrun the zombies, you just need to outrun one other survivor with you. Bonus, more food and toilet paper for you!

Someone needs one of those Paleo books, apparently it describes dehydrating food with a rock or something (before electric dehydrators). I suppose I put Jhugz on a hamster wheel connected to a generator, maybe put a picture of a woman just out of reach and keep him running for 5-8 hours. Better yet, Zombie in the wheel and Jhugz brain just out of reach. Less griping I've got to hear.
