Airline Bankruptcy Article - VERY IMPORTANT READ

One of the best-held secrets of the airline business and it's not just the APA for sure.

Perhaps this should get more airplay? Any business driving its most potentially liable employees to suicide might need a little tweaking. I'm sure the public would see it that way.

I'm pretty sure "the public"'s reaction would be "Oh, that's typical of those overpaid crybabies! I only have ONE Porsche, goodbye cruel world!" etc etc.

Never underestimate the public's preference for disliking people.

People said that about other things I decided the public oughta have a look at. It worked before.

Besides- nowadays pilots are public figures more than ever.. and with the 99%'ers literally bleeding in the streets, I think the story would have some real traction.

Well, the general public doesn't care as long as the ticket is cheap, retaining their "right" to fly LAX to MCO for $79 and have their credit card charges at Luby's get them upgraded to first class.

The unions treat the issue like a hot potato, tap-dance and pretend it doesn't exist.

The airlines don't want the bad publicity and will vehemently pressure the unions to squelch any dissent on the issue.

People... don't... care... When the new fatigue rules come online you can claim victory.

We're not cooked yet. They're still fighting them out.

I care.. and people like me care. That's enough. The ignorant masses may never fully grok, but that's true of anything. We've got the press interested, and that's really most of the battle anyhow.

Perhaps. Battle without end at least from my cheap seat.

The battle is not over so, so by definition it is not decided, but has anyone but Charlie got any optimism about these rest rules coming to fruition in a meaningful way?

You give up too easy. It ain't over 'till it's over. Rise and rise again, my friend.

I ride the AA jumpseat a lot. The things I've heard from APA members are chilling. 777 Captains living check to check. People with serious problems with their money, for various reasons. Allegedly, the APA tracks an annual *suicide rate*.

Much as I often pine for the day when the old dogs retire so we can all climb the ladder... they don't deserve this. This will, in my opinion, almost certainly thin the senior ranks at AA... but it's the equivalent of lighting a small medieval village on fire to 'make a point'.

Living paycheck to paycheck is a function of lifestyle, not salary, regardless of what you do for a living.

I don't agree as a general statement, but when it comes to major airline pilots, I tend to agree with you (for once). Most of the guys I fly with have several kids, a huge house, 2+ cars, tons of toys (boats, RVs, 4-wheelers, wave runners), etc. And they complain that they're struggling to get by. Here's a thought: don't have a kid if you can't afford one. Don't buy a 5,000 sq ft house if you can't afford it. Don't buy a second Lexus if you can't afford it. I could go on.

I have little sympathy for someone making six figures who claims that he lives "paycheck to paycheck." Complaining that we don't make the money that we're worth is one thing. I agree with that. Pilots have taken massive concessions and deserve to get it back. But if you're living paycheck to paycheck as a major airline pilot not in your probationary year, then look in the mirror to place the blame.

Very true. And not just major airline pilots. I hear similar from corporate guys I know who are making six figures, yet always seem to be struggling. Two of them are even single. My ability for sympathy for their plight is low.

Hopefully, next time an airline tells its workers to take concessions or they will go bankrupt, they will look at this example. You never get it back. They will go bankrupt anyways.

There's a story of a guy who was leading a union in bankruptcy proceedings that convinced his pilot group to take a SECOND set of concessions because, well, if we didn't, the judge would totally throw out the contract and give the company whatever they wanted.

Some of us wanted to call their bluff and were considered dumb-asses.

Some of us were like OH SWEET MERCY, SAVE US! GIVE EM WHATEVER THEY WANTZ!

So the guy on the company side, after the second set of concessions was voted in was on record saying (not an exact quote, but close enough) "I lose sleep at night because I didn't get enough out of the pilot group"

A few weeks later that union leader was enjoying birthday cake at the company man's birthday celebration.

Guess where the union leader is now? :) Yup, that's right!

Re: Six figures and not being able to make ends meet. Six figures is not what it used to be. I generally agree, of course, that if you're making what is still a fair bit of scratch, you shouldn't be moaning about how tough it all is (versus, as ATN points out, how unfair it is, which it is), but it's worth remembering that inflation is, for all intents and purposes, a stealth tax.

Why is 6 figures the magic number for comparison?

To a CFI any 5 year regional FO doesn't have any reason to live pay check to pay check. To a 5 year FO no 5 year CA has an excuse to live paycheck to paycheck.

6 figures is not the magic scale.

Putting a digit to a mentality is not so black and white.
