Some hot chick walks into a turning prop

That link leads to a cache poisoning attack. If you are running without a computer condom, I suggest you don't go there.......

I hate to point fingers, HOWEVER: Why in the world was the engine running while passengers, most likely unfamiliar with the perils of the ramp, were emplaning or deplaning?

I agree. Even once it was shut down she should have been escorted off the ramp by either the pilot or a lineman. Passengers just don't understand how dangerous the ramp can be. For all we know she could have been looking down at her smartphone the whole time. Very tragic and completely preventable. A good reminder that a safe flight doesn't end once we make the landing.

Really sad. Such a pretty girl too.

I'm not going to throw stones but sometimes we forget we're responsible for everything.

Sad, I remember when a cute girl who worked ramp for Northwest in Memphis backed into a Saab340 prop as they were about to shut down in the early 2000's, I don't remember the exact year. Butt down still looked fine, Butt up was gone, and when I say gone, I mean GONE

Exactly. I like to think these types of accidents are totally preventable.

This is very sad, indeed. I cannot believe that someone was not watching out for her or that the pilot didn't give a little safety sentence about this at some point while they were first near the aircraft or something. I never assume that pax in a charter situation are aware/knowledgeable of anything, because mostly they are not. Cripes, we instruct them how to use the stairs and tell them to be careful, etc. I also wonder why the engines were running with them on the ramp.

I'm refraining from making a Blonde joke because it's tragic.

I will say though that there are a wide range of people. Some people assume aircraft are safe always and don't think about luggage falling from overhead bins or how to properly listen to the safety briefing. The pilot may have had any number of reasons for keeping the engine going or it could have been a ramper that opened the door too soon and she decided she wasn't waiting. No matter what, she was still the one to walk into that propeller. She could have kept a wider walking distance but on any aircraft the propeller is very close to the aircraft. If you're walking a few feet around you'll miss it.

I put people like this in the same category as those who run railroad gates, walk in front of stopping buses in the winter and walk across crossings when traffic is still doing 40mph across it. To use the phrase, you can't fix stupid.

Without knowing the actual circumstances it's difficult to know for sure but I can't think of too many scenarios where the victim is at fault here. I think it's premature and out of line to call this woman stupid - or even just imply it. I have never let a passenger exit my aircraft with the engines running except in the case where they were also a pilot - even then I never took my eyes off of them or my hand off the mixture controls.

BTW - I can't tell you how many times a non-blonde line person has jumped under my Aztec to chock it a nanosecond after the props stop spinning but while I'm switching the mags off. The starter switch is right in the middle of the same panel as the mag switches.

I think it's a little unfair to judge her so severely using the examples you listed. This is a person who is not familiar with light aircraft and the ramp operations associated with such aircraft. There are sometimes a lot of loud distractions on ramps, coupled with the fact that it was night, and also, the propeller was probably idling, which in a light piston is actually not that loud. Her cellphone could have rang ect ect ect.

Running a railroad gate, walking in front of a bus, and crossing a lane with 40mph traffic are all things that happen a lot in a persons life. People are familiar with the risks because they encounter the above situations so often. If they choose to take those risks, and they get hurt, you can spout off all the Darwinian quotes you want, and I agree with you completely. This situation however, is totally different.
