Trying to get into freight

there is a light at the end of the tunnel...and it's not a jtrain.
If I were not currently candy-comatose, I might stand up and applaud.
Boris, I'm glad you've found something you like. I also agree with you - there is some stuff out there, but it's not always completely clear where those opportunities are. It can be discouraging because 100% of pilots are trying to get about 5%-10% of the jobs in our great race to the top (bottom?), but I think it also can be downright scary, because it's never a yellow brick road. It usually involves a jump to something unknown and then another jump to something else that is more fulfilling. My own story probably makes me the poster boy for unusual career moves but pilot career progression is sometimes nothing ventured, nothing gained.

ljg: Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you've found something approximating light at the end of your tunnel, too. I know I've seen you "around" on the various boards for a long time...if you don't mind my asking, where did you land?

I agree with Boris. Their is a light at the end of the freight tunnel. It's a comfortable lifestyle and depending on your personal QOL desires, time at home is a big bonus.

FWIW, and totally off-topic, I jumped ship for worse pay and worse QOL (well, I kinda didn't have a choice). But I got to fly a JEEEEETTTTTTTTTT (and hey, I'm grateful someone employed me, truly). Then I jumped ship from that for more pay and better QOL in a SINGLE ENGINE airplane...and it's awesome. I could list all the things that I don't like about my job but it would be the garden variety nonsense you get with any job. On balance, it's fantastic. Freightdoggies, there is a light at the end of the tunnel...and it's not a jtrain. Seriously, sometimes I wake up during my week off and look around waiting for the Other Shoe To Drop...there's just no way that this can be a permanent state of affairs. But so far, it hasn't.

I agree Boris, the week on, week off schedules are great. Now just imagine that schedule with the pay and benefits of working at either of the two big integrated cargo carriers. It doesn't get any better in the aviation world than that.

Go 121 freight at one of the two major integrators. Great pay and QOL.

I love to, but it's proven to be quite the challenge to get on at either one of those carriers in this current industry. Minimums are met though!

It may not surprise you to learn that I've already imagined just such a thing! :)

Imagine the money to buy the things you always wanted and the time off to go out and play with said things!

All in good time. Or not. "The World" works on a different clock than us mere mortals. I'm going to concentrate on making the best of what the Gods of time and happenstance have given me. And that does include a few toys! Because in the end we're all just children who grew up too fast and are trying to remember how to play.

That would be approximately $8100.00/month TAKE HOME pay/after taxes on second year pay. Imagine the toys you could buy with that kind of dough!

Hey, if you're trying to sell me on it, you're preaching to the choir, brother! But of course I'm sure you have your own crosses to bear. Catering isn't four star, crew van doesn't arrive lickedy-split, wife spends too much on the new kitchen, etc etc. See, those are problems I don't have to deal with. :D

Maybe he's offering a internal rec or the super secret UPS handshake......

Question though, depending on where you like to read there are some fairly disgruntled folks, mostly in response to the recent furlough, over at Brown that like to say "go anywhere but here." Is that just a disgruntled vocal minority? Speaking for myself at those payscales ANC based for Brown or Purple would be a dream gig.
