NIFA Region VIII champs!

This past week the national champion Flying Salukis Flight Team reclaimed their Region 8 championship!

There was a bit of a disaster at the beginning of the week when a major hailstorm went through Murfreesboro, TN. All of the airplanes were damaged, some to the point that they were un-airworthy, so the decision was made to cancel all flying events.

The competition would be based on the ground events, and out of the 5 ground events that were held, a member of the SIU team placed first in each. Good job to Lewis University, and to the University of Illinois, placing second and third respectively. Well done guys!

We'll see everyone else at nationals!

If this is going to turn into a "lets rip on flight team" thread, I'll just delete it now.

I was on my school's flight team, and I too am laughing. A flight competition decided with...no flying?! Pretty funny stuff.

Haha! Yea, it was very disappointing for everyone involved. It's not much of a competition when the results are determined by test taking alone. We all would have liked to have the competition based on flying events!

I'm competing in region x later this week. Sure, there are some lame parts about NIFA, but overall it's a fun way to spend time around aviation. It is looked upon favorable by all areas of the industry, and making it to nationals allows lets of good networking opportunities.

It's as pointless as any other college competition. It is what you make of it. Haters gonna hate.

Who are you with? I competed once in Region X with Averett (or at least I think it was region X). I thought it was sort of fun. Good hang out I guess.

I was at Region X competition last week with Averett. I never did NIFA when I was in college, but after seeing all the fun those guys had last week I highly regret it now.

Hail ha? Is that why when I flew 5318G this weekend it was covered in potmarks? GO Salukis!! Keep it up!

I was suppose to be a judge at the region with Averett. Couldnt get off work though. I heard Averett got second. Im kinda surprised how well Hampton did, I was on their flight team in the past. I heard Hampton got third, which was surprising because they only had two days to prepare. They recently got a new prof, who is new to the NIFA idea, and doesnt know much about it. Im sorry I missed it this year. Hey joel, did they get to do much flying? I was working in Smithfield when it was going on and I know tuesday it was pretty windy. I think it rained for the rest of the week.

Its not a competition at all. I can't believe people still find interest in NIFA...
I had some of the best times of my college life doing flight team stuff. It was more of a frat than serious team. Meeting other people from all parts of the country and talking with them about their school was great. This industry is all about connections and who knows what could come of meeting people from outside your own university. I am biased seeing that I "met" my fiance on a flight team competition.

And just think 11 years later you decided to marry her! ;)

Heading out with my team to Region II in Prescott this week. My 7th year of coaching though my normal job gets in the way more often than not lately.
