Part 141 Training...

So I haven't been able find this information easily, so thought I would ask...

I am looking to do the IR and CSEL with a Part 141 school in order to use the GI Bill. The question is, if I have all the FAA mins for experience (for part 61), would I need to complete the entire 141 course? I wouldn't think so, but it's toough to find the information. Where I am getting hung up is either using the 10K a year for flight training only or the state max if going through a state school. So...what's the deal? A couple of "stage checks" and then off to the check ride?

in short yes, you would have to complete the 141 course.
Actually, no, the school CAN give you credit for prior training. I want to say 25% if it was part 61, more from another 141/142. Most schools probably won't want to though, as they get more $ from you if you do the whole program. The school I go to is about to get 141 that's how I know that credit can be given.

Fact.

Just wondering where in pat 141 does it say that? Not that I don't trust you but I just want to know for future reference.
is it 141.77?

Im a Chief Flight Instructor at a small 141 flight school. Our training course outlines specifies that we can give up to 25% credit if they transfer from a 61 school. And up to 50% credit if transferring from a 141 school. I as the chief have the authority to determine how much credit they get. Some schools may vary but I believe this is the standard practice. It takes 35 hours to get the IR 141, so half of that is 18 hours. That's not to bad.

On another note, I have never yet had a student come in that I gave them full 50% credit even if they did almost have all the hour requirements met.

Sorry, don't know the exact FAR, but it's in 141. They were looking for it last time I was at the school, so I know it's in there somewhere.

I dont ever recall seeing it in the FARs although I have bad memory so you never know..

I believe its in FAA Order 8900.1 and AC 141-1A

If you are not in a get it done today situation, I would suggest using your GI Bill at a School Like Big Bend CC in Washington State. You take care of 141 issues, work on all your ratings, be going to school, and you will also get the monthly e-5 pay in addition to tuition etc. They are in Moses Lake, Wa. Best to you.

If I had a choice, that's exactly what I would do....however, I still have about a year before I can retire, so I am stuck with what I have around San Antonio. I would wait until I retire, but I am convinced that there will be a GI Bill Post 9/11 version 3.0 that will severely change the new, best flight training program ever. The amount of money the VA is going to spend IS going to get a lot of attention from the DoD and our elected officials and I just can't see them continuing to offer such large amounts of money for this.

BUT...if I had a good guarantee that the program would still be around in a year, then yes, I would be all over it.

You can do your training under pt 141 and then drop out and take your pt 61 checkride at any time. I did this for my commercial, got all my requirements met under pt61 but still had about 12 hours to go to complete the 141 course so I disenrolled and took my checkride under pt 61. Same result!
