Shooting themselves? Nah, they probably drank some good Vodka, fought about it while drunk, and then laughed at how they stole our planes. I can't blame them though. Their planes around that time were utter trash.

The Li-2 was actually an authorized copy of the DC-3.

Fencer, maybe you can shed light on the subject (or anyone else for that matter). I've always heard the Soviets were borderline obsessed with developing a supersonic long-range heavy bomber, and that the Tu-160 is the culmination of all that "obsession"...any truth to that?
 
SurferLucas, to answer this question one need to dig deep into CP Memos, Politburo Directives etc I am not very good at that. It's a known fact though that Tu160 was a direct responce to development of B1. Three leading contractors were competing and Tupolev's Bureau was chosen because they've already had Tu144 experience. First two machines were delivered to regiments even before full flight testing program was complete. Reason - B1 was already in the field. It was planned to build 100 bombers but by the Collapse they had thirty something.
It's still considered a powerful deterrent couple years ago two bombers were in Venezuela doing some PR runs for Chavez.

The Tu-160 is indeed an impressive machine, and it's got more of a graceful look about it. The B-1 looks like the tat'd up, hardcore chick that will wreck you and your bed...the Tu-160 looks like a female Russian ballerina that is flexible, strong and will still put a hurtin' on you.

Ever get a chance to see a Tu-28 Fiddler up-close and personal? That's just one big ass plane, no two ways about it.
 
Tu-28? For women. I give you the Lavochkin La-250 "Anakonda". For MEN.
