Post your spin training encouragement / success stories here

Re: Post your spin training encouragement / success stories

Do you know if the 150/150s are still approved for spins with the non-acro STC?

I'm not sure off the top of my head, but I don't think so. I'll double check though.

I agree, spin training should be part of the requirements for the PPL

FIFY. The reason they took it out was because more people were killing themselves doing improper spin training than through accidental spins. Also, alot of todays next-gen trainers are not certified for intentional spins.

true but that's because they don't need to be for primary training. BUT, if spin training were a required part of the PPL then I'm more than sure that today's manufacturers would designing trainers that WOULD be spin rated.

How Cessna made a high wing cantilevered strut airplane that cannot be safely spun (DirtPounder, er, SkyCatcher, we're looking at you here) is beyond me.

I dont know if it's true that it "cannot be safely spun", the prototype spin crashes were reportedly due to aggressive, cross-controlled stalls resulting in flat spins... which can be "unrecoverable" in many aircraft.

My point was that the aircraft is not certificated for intentional spins. Which means it cannot be safely (in this case using legal and safe interchangeably) spun.

Re: Post your spin training encouragement / success stories

I just got my spin signoff last week and it felt great! It took me 2 flights because i was real rusty w/ the 152 and with flying in general. The first time we went up I just got disoriented and wasn't able to recover fast enough or correctly. I found what helps is to talk yourself through the procedure outloud, and don't think about what is going on: "OH CRAP IM IN A SPIN," or anything like that. I was also having trouble getting into a spin on the first attempt because i wasn't holding the controls through the first 2 turns. full back elevator, full L/R rudder. Again, to prevent freaking out I just told myself to just hold the controls, & count the number of times a road/building/pond/ any reference point comes into view. Since I was supposed to let it spin at least twice, counting the turns was important.

When you take it apart like that it was pretty easy, and after being able to establish / recover from 2 spins in each direction, I was good to go.

One cool thing I noticed is how when you are in the spin, the G forces on your body feel just like straight and level flight. Just like it says in several books, the forces on the airplane are 1G. I didn't believe that until I actually felt it. What does create the G force feeling is the recovery. pulling up from the dive puts you into your seat pretty good. It happens so fast it might be hard to distinguish between the 2, but the spin part is definitely just 1G.

Re: Post your spin training encouragement / success stories

Spin training is fantastic--I did mine in a Super Decathlon, though I had previously spun a 152 during my PPL. One of these days--cash and time allowing--I'd like to do a full-on Upset Recovery Course, though--generally speaking--acro doesn't interest me that much.
