holding over intersection w/o dme on radial

I'm confused about the question, why do you feel you need DME to identify an intersection?
Two radials intersect, why do you need DME to identify those?

how do you know when to start time outbound. Look where the 15 dme arc off bzn intersects the hold, its halfway through the outbound leg. Starting outbound time abeam a dme distance off hia makes sense to me, but identifying abeam the intersection outbound is confusing me.

The second example off the helena approach plate makes sense because you can use dme off the radial your holding on to start time outbound. I have only flown holds over fixes like ndb or vor's, so i may be missing something obvious.

The only thing i can think of is starting time over intersection for the standard rate 180 turn, and then starting timing outbound after the 1 minute timed turn, because negating any winds you should be abeam the intersection.

If it were me, I'd start the time when the wings are level in the outbound leg. If your time is off inbound due to wind, adjust your outbound leg accordingly like you normally would.

Although - I haven't flown in something that was /A or /U in a couple years, so I could be way off.

Yes, start your time when
1)abeam fix
2)wings level

Whichever occurs last.

check out the missed approach hold, it gives you dme from bzn, but you are holding on the hia radial. Dont you need dme from the hia radial your on to fly the hold.

Here is a similar missed approach hold, but here they give you the dme from the vor you are holding on

To answer your question, no son (lol), you don't need DME off of HIA to fly this hold. What you need to do is fly the dagum 223* degree radial until the 094 off of HIA centerz! As Mini would say "hit the fix and turn outbound!"

BZN 15 is really just "icing on the cake" for this particular hold. The DME has nothing to do with HIA, but everything to do with BZN.

This is a great excercize. Fire it up on MSFX and figure it out!

Not much experience flying /U? Lucky you. Wings level is the name of the game. Keep correcting it every time around the pattern.

Or bring a handheld GPS.

As others have said start time when at wings level in this case.

Always use wings level when you are unable to identify the fix on your outbound leg.
