Who wears the hat?

mooneyguy

been around forever
So, I just finished my second sequence off IOE. I figured it was only a 3 day trip and I would carry my fancy airline pilot hat with me. My first trip with it, and I lose it! I sat it down while waiting for the plane. Then I walked down to the plane which was very late. Once I realized it and walked back up to the gate it was gone!

That just got me to thinking, how many of you carry yours, and actually wear it?

If you do wear it, where do you wear it. In the terminal, or just out side?

Seems to be more of an airline culture thing. Delta - Yes. United - No. ASA - Yes. Colgan - No.

Our contract actually says now that a hat is not required.

I think our CA hats look nice, the FO ones look cheap.

We have to have them when we are wearing our blazer (winter), so when I have to have it with me, I usually wear it so I don't lose it.

No cover for me. I have a problem on principle with wearing a cover indoors. Maybe it is from all those years of the Navy drilling that into my head.

i wear mine in the terminal. Normally hang it up right away when i get in the plane though, to hot to wear on the walk around. Sometimes i get crap for wearing it but i dont care, i like it haha.

This company doesn't require hats.

Last company did, so I wore it as asked. There are times you will have drag, but why cause it?

If it was optional, I'd not have it.

If you carry your hat you look like a tool, whether you realize it or not.

Military rules don't apply, your FOM (GOM) applies.

The End.

I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Thats what I'm talking about. I've always said I want our new Surejet uniforms to be either shorts and flip flops or ten gallon hats and spurs.

Though I think if all the pilots dressed like the stig from top gear that would be pretty cool too.

Never even bought one Tim. When I see someone wearing a hat, it is usually a negative connotation I derive from it. Also, we called them "Bus Driver Hats" in the Air Force, so that doesn't help either. Dunno - They just kinda look silly to me.

Yeah Michael, I had to laugh at myself too!

I agree. The airforce kinda pounded that one into as well. It just felt weird wearing it indoors. Some things the military teaches you are just hard to unlearn!

Yeah, I call it the bus driver hat too. I figured if the company was gonna pay for half of it, I'd get one. Guess I don't have have to worry about it anymore. haha btw Jeremy, I will be down in DFW 31aug...woohoo. I like ORD but the DFW commute will be soooo much nicer!

I wear it in the winter with my Blazer but thats mostly because it keeps my head warm when I am out doing preflights and security inspections at 5 am in the Northeast during snow storms and gusty winds... I couldn't stand it in the summer. I agree with the culture thing too though

Say what you will about the hats, but I think they can offset the creepiness of the trench coat. I rock the hat to prevent myself from looking like a sexual predator when the weather calls for the overcoat. Other than that, I leave it alone.

If its optional, I don't see the point in wearing it. But, I don't understand the guys who wear a cap in the cockpit either, so take that with a grain of salt.

Wear the hat during all seasons per company policy. At my last airline it was optional so I wore it with the blazer but not without.

Agree with Polar742, you look rediculous carrying the hat. It makes question your confidence. It says I'm not self confident enough to wear it because someone might make fun of me but I'm too big of a wuss to be a rebel.

It's "optional" here, just if you're going to wear the matrix jacket (aka, neoprene jacket) you have to have the hat. So I carry mine just in case I need it.

I don't care if you think it looks ridiculous carrying it around the airport, when I'm in ATL and trying to get out to the west coast, I ain't wearing it...it's too dang hot and I'm not going to be asking for a ride with a mop on my head! :)

Eagle pilot here. I wore mine up until recently when Dallas was moved to the surface of the sun. I will wear it again if/when it ever cools down. When I was still wearing it I did manage to leave it in the hotel lobby at CHO. Luckily I realized it as we were getting off the shuttle at the airport, and the driver went back and got it for me!
