AA flight crew assaulted in MIA

As good as it feels to be a badass in situations like this, not swinging back and defusing the situation is the best thing you can do if you want to avoid losing your job. Internet bravado will likely do you no good.

Your mind is your best weapon in any situation. It is always better to talk your way out of it, walk away, or just put yourself in a bad situation ot begin with. Once a fight starts however, fight to win at all costs.

I remember I was at a firing range and there was a doctor next to me who was carrying a concealed weapon. He was telling me that the incidences of CCL's using their weapons outside of the law was less than law enforcement. Basically saying that concealed carriers are more responsible with their guns than cops.

But what are the percentages? Total number don't really matter here. Cops are dealing with crap everyday more than the average CCW citizen.

I know of two guys who got into fights, albeit with other crewmembers, off duty. But regardless of the circumstances, they're unemployed now.

If its absolutely down to life or death, I'll beat your ass like a spider monkey. But if there's a scintilla of a chance of avoiding physical conflict or an opportunity to relieve the situation with a quick escape to the SIDA or whatever, I'll take that opportunity.

No glory to be sought or macho to preserve in the airline business!

Now if I didn't need my airline job, it's time for,,,,,,,

MORTAAAAAAAAAAL KOMBAAAAAAAAAAAT!!!

But I do.

Remember the 1st officer in 2002 who used a fire axe on someone who kicked out a panel on the cockpit door? If I remember correctly the captain was in the head.

And then there's the other side...

A Norwegian court sentenced an Algerian man to 17 years in jail on Thursday for running amok with an ax aboard a small plane in northern Norway last year and almost causing it to crash...Two other passengers overpowered Bouteraa and the pilots managed to land the plane with the cockpit splattered with blood.

I'm not one, but have flew with several FFDO's. They cannot use their weapon unless they are on duty in the cockpit. You could be at home and someone breaks into your house, you legally could not use your FFDO weapon. As far as the AA crew/Captain he was in a tricky situation. Me personally, my personal safety would have brought a can of whoop behind on that guy.

...Unless you "reasonably believe you are in imminent danger of serious bodily harm or death"... Adjust that phrase accordingly depending on what state you live in...

No. It isn't your gun, the government lends it to you for only one purpose. You would lose it afterwards.

That would be terrible if a drugged out felon broke into your home at 3 am and started killing everybody in your home, you couldn't use the .40...oh well.

Weigh the choices.
1.) Loose your gun for protecting yourself.
2.) Be dead.

I admit to be a little fast with my reaction sometimes but this one appears to be a no brainer.

In my case I might have to put the .38 away and use my 12 gauge.

What constitues "serious"? To a garbage man does a punch to the face resulting in a slight loss of vision in the left eye = serious bodily harm? Might be a tough sell to a jury. A pilot on the other hand..............

Me with two drunk guys beating me up in a jetway? It's reasonable, it's danger, and it could easily result in serious bodily harm. I would have been using anything I could to protect myself...ball point pen, cool hat, four-bar shoulder boards, etc. Of course I'm basing this entirely on the news report linked here.

Of course the idea of staying in the cockpit until the police arrived makes the most sense. Why rush to get him off the plane? The flight is already delayed.

First off, I was responding to the burglary post. I thought we had established already that pulling a gun on the jetway was bad idea for a myriad of reasons. (unless it's your absolute last available course of action). You should be thinking escape.

But to answer the first question, in NJ case law, they don't argue whether or not you are actually in the described situation. They argue whether or not you, as a reasonable person, believed you were in imminent danger.....but, having said that. Unless you're LE, you must have exhausted your escape / retreat option.

I fight like a gorilla/honey badger hybrid, you have been warned. :)

Buy your own! H&K gives a discount to pilots, same model as the FFDO gun too.

Not that there's anything wrong with H&K, but then you'd miss out on the Walther P99c AS. :)

I just have to ask.....what kind of pu$$sies do we have flying our airplanes? Why didn't they beat this guys ass? Life verbally threatened......Punched in the face in the aircraft.....beat down in the jetbridge...... chased into the terminal!!!! What kind of crew was this?

Guess the crew wasn't as bad ass as you Rambo.
