Shutdown of FAA possible in House, Senate clash

Re: Partial FAA Shutdown at midnight, today (7/22/2011)

There should be some sort of continuing education once you get your pilots license, jtrain is right about that at least. I don't think a PC every 12 months is necessary (especially since most airlines are moving to a non-PC AQP system anyway) but a "BFR" every 24 months doesn't seem to cut it with some once in a blue moon pilots or really old geezers. But who cares if they generate an RA? Its incredibly easy to do that, call me when one collides with you.

The rest I don't agree with, though.

Woohoo! Time to book some tickets without having to pay any federal taxes... this is exciting for those of us who still pay for commercial tickets. Adds up to about $50 round trip :)

Yeah, the System is fine and totally reasonable. It's all them bubbas out there flying around like their tax dollars pay for the System that are the problem. As long as it's just us ATPs out there (wait, do you even have an ATP, Mr. Train?) we'll all be totally rational and safe. I, for one, have never done anything dumb in an airplane. Not once. And I'm sure that none of you ever have, either.

No sir! All I do is swing gear, sir! I don't think, sir! I don't pay attention to anything around me, sir! All I do is exactly what the captain asks me because he's the captain, sir! Speaking of, captain, would you like some coffee, sir? And I'll take the fat one, sir!

Re: Partial FAA Shutdown at midnight, today (7/22/2011)

I've reached a point in my life where I'm a-ok with this. That's sacrilege to some folks around here, but I've had just about enough of RA's being generated by GA aircraft flown by pilots who don't know their butt from a hole in the ground. I'd be thrilled if GA aircraft were banned from controlled airspace unless the pilot can pass a PC every 12 months and operate on an IFR flight plan.

And then there are the airline guys driving around with their heads down...before you were so high and mighty, you flew one of them "little airplanes", right? Don't forget where you started, and try not to bloody your knuckles as you pull up that ladder.

Having a better (or really, any) Part 61 continuing qualification program is a good idea that will improve safety. Improving safety is good. I seem to remember that's a part of all of our jobs, actually. Or at least, it's a part of mine.

User fees are a bad idea that will decrease traffic and consequently jobs available in aviation. I shouldn't have to tell you that this is a bad thing.

They're really apples and oranges, but saying you favor user fees because it'll make your job easier by getting all those little airplanes out of the way is unbelievably fallacious and unfounded. And it will do you far more harm than good over the long run.

(There are Part 91 operations with high levels of training. Mine is one of them. Guess I'd better start studying for recurrent, actually, it's only 3 months off. You'll never solve the "weekend warrior" problem, but you could start helping build a better sandbox, instead of flinging fleas.)

Me either. Everything I've ever done has been perfect. :sarcasm:

The System is reasonably safe. Not to say it couldn't be safer, of course.

I'm not high and mighty, I'm sick of people trying to use their 182's as battering rams against my aircraft because of ineptitude.

It's a 206!

Re: Partial FAA Shutdown at midnight, today (7/22/2011)

Anyone who advocates the demise of GA must believe they will never lose a medical, never want to take their son/daughter for a flight or believe in the true meaning of flying. As far as I'm concerned slinging gear and hitting AP at 3000' isn't my idea of being an aviator. I don't know bout everyone else but I found more freedom flying a GA plane than punching holes in the sky in an airliner.

Due respect: See and avoid is everyone's responsibility, and the public airways belong to everyone. At least they do for the moment, anyway. Air carriers don't own the sky. I get the consternation, but there's a more appropriate and productive remedy.

I don't like getting run over by a certain company with purple 737s either, but I'm not about to suggest they get kicked out of "my" airspace so I can drive back and forth at 140 knots in the middle of the final for the Intergalactic Jet Port. Quite the opposite. We do, in fact, all have to get along now. We're users too!

Unless you're Chicago or Las Vegas, and you don't take any GA traffic, at all, ever (I was actually told this on the radio in the case of the latter terminal).

He's just mad that most of us who make our living in Part 91 make more money and have more time off than he does. :pirate:

Every mapped in Tampa?

Every mapped in Tampa?
Me? No. Not yet. I am trying to avoid hot and humid, with...eh, a very poor record of success this summer so far. Wouldn't be surprised if I do soon, I usually have no idea where I'm going until the day of.

Lucky you, they are the opposite of polite.

And you know? The more I fly , the more I realize it's not just Weekend Warriors who do stupid things in airplanes. The other day I had my safety pilot take over and essentially chandelle the airplane to avoid an ERJ that lined up for the wrong runway while I was under the hood. The point of this is that we all do stupid things in airplanes and make stupid mistakes so even if we take away GA, we're still going to have pilots doing dumb things....GA and airlines have existed together for years and in many cases it is because of GA that we have pilots to fly airliners. Does Dr. Bonanza M.D on a bright Saturday morning still annoy me? Yes, a whole lot actually, but so does Mr. I have Spikey hair and I'm too good to listen to the ATIS jet pilot (SAF's ATIS always says, "SAF does not have radar, on initial contact please give an accurate position and altitude") Yet we still get guys blasting in saying, "Shiny jet 12345 with ya on the visual" followed by "Roger say position" followed by, "Uhhhhhhhhhh.......uhhhhhhh"
