Commercial jet strikes, kills 2 deer on Brainerd runway
Article by: PAUL WALSH , Star Tribune Updated: July 7, 2011 - 3:28 PM

A regional commercial jet struck and killed two deer on the runway after arriving at Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport from the Twin Cities, denting the plane but leaving the 21 people aboard unscathed, a spokesman for the airline said Thursday.

The collision late Monday of the Delta CRJ-200 plane from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, operated by Pinnacle Airlines, damaged the landing gear door and a wing flap on the 50-seater, said airline spokesman Joe Williams.

The damage forced the airline to cancel Tuesday morning's scheduled flight back to the Twin Cities, Williams said.

None of the 18 passengers or three crew members was hurt, he said.

"We've had wolves, coyotes and fox, geese and sandhill cranes," said Brainerd airport manager Steve Sievek, but deer getting on the runway is a rarity. "That's the price you pay up here in the North Country."

Sievek said he doubts the passengers realized there was a collision at the time. "It was just thump, thump and they were gone," he said. "I guess the plane was going in excess of 100 miles per hour."

Sievek lamented losing the Tuesday morning flight, given that every seat had been sold. A bus was offered to customers as an alternative, but only about 12 chose that option, he said.

I'm loggin' PIC from 6B!

Wait, are there six rows in an RJ? Oh yeah!

"None of the 18 passengers or three crew members was hurt, he said."

Shouldn't it be "were hurt"?

This thread is useless without pics. Sorry, the morbid side of my personality is coming out. A deer should be able to do quite a bit of damage after some of the pictures I've seen of bird strikes.

Yes, it should be:

With words that indicate portions—some, all, none, percent, fraction, part, majority, remainder, and so forth —look at the noun in your of phrase (object of the preposition) to determine whether to use a singular or plural verb. If the object of the preposition is singular, use a singular verb. If the object of the preposition is plural, use a plural verb.

I was working in HIB (hibbing MN) when Mesaba hit a dear at night in the Saab 340B. Hit it with the right prop. The prop disintegrated and damaged the ac and flap. The dear survived. The airport authorities went hunting for the dear the next day. The dear's leg was broken and couldn't jump the fence to get out. I took 6 hrs and 15 shoots to get the dear. The aircraft was in HIB for about 2 weeks had to replace the prop and engine, then flown to msp for repairs.

i actually don't understand why they have air service, especially a CRJ. it isn't that far from MSP

Talk to Delta. They're the ones parking Saabs. I'm betting it's an EAS route. You could say the same for Rochester, MN, but most of the time I fly that route, it's got at least 40 people going to RST and 50 going to MSP.

Its about a three hour drive from BRD to MSP. A bus could be a reasonable alternative to a lot of places but I would much rather fly than ride a bus.

This.

It's really not that close. add gas, free parking and the fact the fare is subsidized and probably the same as going out of msp, I would gather that flight carries a few people

3 hour drive=no bueno. Especially in the winter, I'm sure everyone would rather fly out close to home. Intra-Minnesota routes are all going RJ since the Saabs are on the way out, from what I hear they're doing well, though other than DLH most only have 2 frequencies a day with the RJs.

Now when DL eliminates the 50 seat flying in the coming years, we'll see if they actually put -700s on the routes.

The Saab is pretty much ideal for those intra-MN routes. It is absolutely ridiculous to use an RJ on them. gg Delta.
