Eh, you know... been around the block a while. About 2-3 years in the job and you will have plugged just about everything there is to plug, and everything is just another hole... It's a bit like becoming Ron Jeremy. (Or so my boom operator friends tell me. I'm a KC-135 IP, myself).

Actually it was the "can't say I have too much experience with heavies" line. I could probably even guess your base of assignment, assuming active duty. Does it start with a K?

Nice. Yeah, I love it actually. It's good times and I enjoy being around pilots since on the civilian side, I'm about to go to ground school at a 121 carrier. You might be seeing me soon-ish. I'm a younger guy who is about 2 years away from my degree (pluggin away at it full time online).. I plan to get a pilot slot in any guard unit that will take me once I complete the degree or at least have the 90 credit application minimum (preferably the unit I'm in now). I want the 135 obviously for heavy turbojet time that will help me out of the regionals eventually. I have all kinds of plans ;) I could talk for days.. My brother is active duty F-16 and he is getting the short end of the stick right now.. Currently on an ALO tour in Qatar. I didn't wanna fall into that trap so I just went guard and got all my ratings civilian.. blah blah blah.. sorry to babble, fellas :/
 
Yeah, I'll admit it. I've sprayed a hog's canopy before. Also have tapped his canopy with it.. Let's just say he was NOT happy. But I've since figured it out and seen tendencies for different airplanes..

There's really no way to avoid it. There are those that have and those that will. Thats why there's dents all over the A-10 nose area. No biggie.

Yeah, actually. In the T-6 syllabus there's "close trail" which is basically 2-4 ship lengths behind and slightly below. In the T-1, there's a whole "air refueling" simulation phase. Obviously there isn't a boom or a receptacle on that plane, but you practice rendezvous, the precontact, and the "contact" positions. The airplanes are a little smaller, so you don't get as much of the bow-wave, though. And the big thing that cuts down on bow wave is that the T-1 has a T-tail, which reduces the amount of downwash on the elevator (and hence, the CHANGE in downwash that causes bow-wave in the first place). Also, no real boom... so the boom can't act as a rudder or speedbrake based on it's position.
 
I'll be headed out on Monday, solo, to try it out for the first time........nothing to it right?? Perhaps they will find time to give us the class first, though I doubt it :)

Every F/A-18 pilot is also a tanker pilot now that the S-3s went away, as I understand. Does this include USMC C/D Hornets too?
 
I was always told that the Boom Operator (KC-135)was the best job in the Air Force for enlisted folks.

Why?

Where else can an enlisted person be issued a plane and a pilot, be able to lay down at work and do nothing but pass gas!!

Are there airwings that have C's only? Or does every airwing have at least an E or F or both squadrons embarked?

And how come USMC D models dont operate from the boat?

There are all E and F airwings, but no all C airwings. I would have to say the lack of gas in a D would be the reason. They have about 1k less gas, so they can do CQ, but have no bring back in a combat configuration.
 
And if Im not mistaken, larger receivers like the C-5 and C-141 have a bow wave that actually pushes the tanker some.

While boom AR has its challenges, it's nothing compared to probe/drogue AR, especially in a helo.

I flew both the KC-135 and KC10 (14 years in each one). The -135 did get pushed around some by a bow wave, mostly from the C5, 747 (NEACP bird) and the KC10.

Since the -10 had a receiver receptacle (in addition to a boom, internal hose/drogue, wing pod hose/drogues) the -10 pilots could "do it both ways".

Anyhow, receiver A/R was pretty easy in the -10 as the pitch up was negligible due to the tail engine countering the force of the wing engines when adding power. Receiving from a -10 was a LOT easier as the envelope was a lot bigger, and the boom actually "rolled" from side to side so at the left or right azimuth limit the envelope was the same size as when centered. Behind the -135 the envelope got smaller in elevation at the left or right azimuth limits.

Biggest challenge for receiver A/R is throttle control, especially when heavy. If you were aft, you added power to move forward. But with several hundred thousand pounds (max GW for the -10 was 597,000) nothing much happened very fast. So a lot of pilots would add more power, just about the time the first power additive started working. Result was too fast forward, and pilot pulls off power. Due to inertia, nothing much happened, so more power off. This resulted in the "power induced oscillation" of in and out but in the reverse of what was happening to the power.

Other challenge was learning that when you move UP in the envelope, you had to add power as the plane actually climbed a few feet and if you didn't add the power, it would move back in the envelope, possibility to the aft limit, resulting in a disconnect.

The really "fun" part was "running the limits". More of a confidence building thing than anything else. You move to left limit, then center, then over to right. Same with up/down and in/out. After you really got good (I was but I did it for 14 years) you did all three limits at once. IN, RIGHT, UPPER, then move to the other "corner" OUT, LEFT, LOWER. Took some time to get to that point, but since a lot of our missions had a two ship, when we were droning along we could practice, practice, practice.

In the reserve squadron we also did refueling in climbs and descents. Again, no big deal as it's still formation flying, just had to take into account the different power settings to compensate for the climb or descent. At times when we really got bored we would do "Vertical S" manuevers...

Life was good then, still is now! Had I known retirement was going to be this much fun I would have done it when I was 21 and started working when I was 60! Woo Hoo!
 
Don't know if this will work or not, so here goes.

Back in the day when men were men and sheep were nervous, our squadron hooked up with the "Coonass Militia" (the had to change to Cajun Militia to be PC) which is the ANG F-15 unit and NAS New Orleans. Two KC-10s and five F-15s. The had photographers on both -10s and one in the back seat of a F-15. Spent about two hours refueling and the video was edited down to a short segment, and set to music. It later aired on a local TV station. Has KC-10 to F-15 refuelings, both from the tanker and receiver's view, and -10 on -10 refueling again from both ends of the boom.

"Jazz" is the F-15s call sign and the KC-10s are "Opec". The refueling took place over the Gulf of Mexico just south of New Orleans. The weather was perfect with clouds below which gives an idea of how fast the planes are going.

As a side note, I was the 78th Commander (Barksdale AFB, 1984) and was lucky enough to be there when SAC started letting units pick their own call sign. I put in "Opec" because in the KC10 "We had ALL the gas"....unbelievably it was approved and to the best of my knowledge is still used by the 78th, now at McGuire AFB, NJ.

An interesting and somewhat tragic note is that one of the two KC-10s in the movie was destroyed by fire on the ground at Barksdale later that year, with the loss of life of a maintenance warrior. Only hull loss or death in the history of the KC10 program which started 30 years ago this past April.

1. The old EC-135 Looking Glass birds that SAC had, when they were retired, why weren't they kept as tankers? As if I remember correctly, not only were they command post airplanes, but they retained their boom and could refuel other aircraft ala KC style, while also being receiver capable. I don't believe there are many "regular" KC-135s that are receiver capable.

2. Were KC-10s in SAC attached to B-52/B-1 Bomb Wings just as the KC-135s were? If so, which wings were they paired since there were only 60 airframes?

3. How did you like the A-model J57s?

Only remember two KC-135 accidents that I knew well (though there's been many): AZ ANG KC-135 midair with a Grumman Yankee on approach to Luke AFB in 1982, and a KI Sawyer KC-135 that crashed on takeoff from Dyess AFB in '89, filled with dependants en route to Hawaii.

As I mentioned before, I like the KC-10 director light system. Very successful tanker conversion program, unlike what we're finding today with the tanker bids. Oh and in your video....I love the old-school original paintjob of the -10 with white over gray and the blue cockpit roof. The "shamu" colors weren't bad either, just very drab.

The EC-135s that were the "Looking Glass" birds were few in number relative to the KC-135A of which there were 640ish built if my fading memory serves me right. The EC's had TF33s (fans) and the As had J57 water wagons. For fleet commonality it just wasn't worth the effort. Same applied to the myriad of RC-135s, some of which were one off really weird birds. There were six "Cristine" KC135As that had receptacles and were "de modified" KC135Ds that had been used in the Pacific for something. They had the J57s and ended up at Castle where I was and instructor.

Eventually the fleet got modified with the big fans and became KC-135Rs. "Rs are bigger than yours" was there motto. The ANG got JT3D engines (and a lot of other stuff) off TWA and American 707s when the retired them. Those became KC-135Es. Not sure if they still exist or were converted to Rs. The Es had thrust reversers which the As & Rs did not.

2. Were KC-10s in SAC attached to B-52/B-1 Bomb Wings just as the KC-135s were? If so, which wings were they paired since there were only 60 airframes?

The first KC10 unit was at Barksdale and was part of the 2nd BW. There were two squadrons that flew them, one active, on reserve. This was like the MAC 141 "associate" program where active & reserve crews flew the same airplanes, assigned to the active duty wing. This was different that many AFRES (now AFRC) units that had their own airplanes, i.e "unit equipped". The first unit at March AFB was also assigned to the host Bomb Wing which I think (foggy memory again...it as 30 years ago) was the 22nd BW. When the KC10s stood up at Seymour Johnson it was a TAC base, 4th TFW (Fourth But First was their motto, which quickly "Fourth BUTT First" by the irreverent tanker toads!) was the host unit as I think the 68th BW was deactivated about that time. Eventually the KC10s were assigned to MAC (by then AMC) wings at Travis and McGuire where they are now.

3. How did you like the A-model J57s?

In 14 years and thousands of hours I never had a problem with them, nor did I ever lose water on an engine. They were pretty much bullet proof and although they "turned fuel and water into noise and smoke" they went fast as hell when you really wanted to. The KC135A was a honest to God, no , .90 mach airplane. At that speed though the cockpit noise was a lot, but then it was pretty loud anyhow and by that time we were all deaf so who cared?

The airframe was as bullet proof as the engines. I used to joke it was carved out of a solid block or iron! I flew in the training school at Castle AFB for 5 years and had thousands of landings by students, many of who were right out of the T38. Trust me, that airplane could drop in from 20 feet, bounce back up 15, and come back down without breaking up! It was a GREAT airplane...the "Gooney Bird" of the jet age. Consider that the first ones were built in 1955 and the last in 1964, and over half of them are still flying! The old joke is that when the LAST "B anything" i.e. a bomber goes to the bone yard, a KC-135 crew will fly in and pick them up. I can't think of a single big multi engine plane still flying in the USAF that is as old. Since the KC-135 came into service, the C141 came in and left, so did all but the B52H which was built AFTER the last KC-135 rolled off the assembly line.

Remember both of those. Good friend of mine was an Air Reserve Technician in the Sky Harbor Guard unit and knew all of the crew that was killed in that crash. There were a lot of others I remember too as I flew them from 1967 to 1981 when I got into the KC10. I was at UTapao, Thailand in 1968 and watched the lead in our cell crash on takeoff as we sat on the end of the runway waiting for him to get airborne so we could go. We used a 1 minute interval.

As I mentioned before, I like the KC-10 director light system. Very successful tanker conversion program, unlike what we're finding today with the tanker bids. There were a lot of improvements in the -10 over the -135. Fly by wire boom that after a disconnect would stay in whatever position it was when the disconnect happened rather than move back to the center as it did with the -135. The PDI (Pilot Director Lights) were another improvement as they reacted to direction and speed so if you moved real fast they would give a solid rather than flashing signal. Personally I like refueling with the PDIs off as it sharpened my skills of knowing where I was in the envelope using references of the tanker other than the lights.

I hated the so called "camouflaged" paint job. That was the brainchild of one of the biggest s I ever met, and at the time was the SAC/DO. I have a picture of the Barksdale ramp from 35,000 feet and you can see the "camouflaged" planes easier than the "white tops" as the white tops blend in with the concrete ramp. I suppose if the -10 ever flew off a dirt ramp the camo would be better, but since that was impossible, the old paint job was best. Back when the original paint scheme was brought out, there was a red strip above and below the blue one separating the white on top and grey on bottom. That was really neat but got axed. (probably by the same that thought up the camo jobs)

Well, probably the last time you will ever ask me a question in the post. I just really enjoyed my 40 years in aviation, especially the 28 in the Air Force and have a lot of fond memories.

OPEC is indeed still in use from the Mcguire unit, they come work the Tower pattern from time to time where I work. Thank you for sharing the history.
 
Thanks for the update...good to hear it still has outlasted the PC attacks that have come it's way over the years!
 
Back in the day, waaaaaay back, we hauled the Blues around a lot because we had the drogue installed all the time. Here's a pix from one of those trips. Tried to get him to come to precontact like that but he didn't. I guess he wasn't the Jarhead pilot in the group!
