Oops...stuck mic houston center

No problem. Having been to the "big brown desk" in Atlanta with the chief pilot on one end and my crew and the ALPA reps on the other, the world that we think we live in and the world we ACTUALLY live in are very VERY different, and I want to elucidate that when appropriate.

I've had two fireable situations, maybe three in the last almost 20 years of my professional career as an aviator and I'd rather people not have to deal with that.

But horse... water... they never drink.

I think what most folks aren't realizing is that HRDiva is in HR. Once HR decides that you're a liability for the corporation, you're toast.

There isn't enough money in the Exxon treasury to entice me into HR. I view it as a largely thankless task. You have to have a hand on the pulse of all major areas of the company - often putting up with pressure from Finance and other areas, keeping up with employment laws (onerous), and on the flip side you're dealing with all of the various employee issues. I'd rather stay firmly away from that area and simply be one that flings arrows at it! I believe I would die of bleeding ulcers if I had that job for a week. That's just my view - I'm far to impatient to be an HR executive. Interesting is to look at how a good HR exec. isn't a cost-center but actually can add to the bottom line. I hope never to have enough people to need an HR person (because I want more automation and outsourcing) but I would dread the day I'd have to find one - because if you get a sucky one it is hard to overcome and really good ones are tough to find and valued.

Oh do tell, this can be a learning session.

First off this guy is a pig, and likely to be adding alimony to his expenses soon, but probably not the only one at SWA or in a cockpit. Just a thought, what if the FO is gay? Imagine how he feels hearing such a misogynistic, homophobic conversation for the first time in his career?

What I find funny is the outrage from the media, and public. Why does the public holds pilots in such high regards, while the industry treats us like... well we know how that's going. The fact that this guy is sitting in the right seat at SWA means he likely landed something on an aircraft carrier and anyone who has seen Top Gun knows what kind of people that breeds. I didn't know that Tom Kazansky flew for Southwest.

Well, if he were gay, he should take it like a man....no jokes please ;). Why couldn't he be Air Force, they have mad skills too!!!

.

To play with the "what if"; if this would be the first time in his life that the FO ever heard homophobic conversation.....ever; then that FO must have been born on Mars and grown up on a deserted Pacific island with no human contact of any kind prior to flying for SWA.

Lol, good point. He did the jump to conclusions a bit, the whole alimony thing. From my experience, some women are worse than men so his wife might be loving this but that is a "what if" scenario!

Fat people are considered disabled?

This is news to me, I guess VTA will have to redesign their coaches to include a Overweight Person Seating Area in the front of the bus, just aft of the wheelchair securements.

"Upon the request of the operator or other authorized individual, please vacate this seat for a person with a BMI over 30."

Oh, I guess it might be:

Cases have required one to show some different underlying medical condition that is a disability and that causes obesity as a "symptom."
If it is self induced, it doesn't count.

Ah, yes . . . "human relations." Former FAA Assistant Administrator of Human Resource Management Ventris Gibson. Google her sometime. After you've sampled just some of those article, Google her name again along with the additional words, "go around boston amass."

What a real sweetheart she was.

Excuse me? I'm probably old enough to be your mother. You speak without knowledge. You say things like 40 years ago this would not have happened when you don't know what happened 40 years ago.

I grew up in that vastly different time and know that you don't know what you are talking about.

What is your problem? You disagree with me, fine. Post something intelligent and list your reasons why you disagree and I'll listen. Post nothing but arrogant investigative rhetoric without an ounce of substance and I will fire right back. Why turn this into a pissing match. You fired first lady and it was a completely unprovoked attack. Not liking or agreeing with something someone posts hardly justifies insult. You really need to come down off your hi horse. And I am 41 for the record, you might be older, but you certainly don't act like it.

I grew up before cable TV, digital media and cell phones..In a time where if you wanted to talk to someone it was easier to go to there house then to call them. It was when people still respected one another much more then they do today, and idiotic issues like this thread's topic was dealt with immediately and without CNN..There were boundaries in the 70's and early 80's that few people crossed. And my mother, my father, aunts and uncles who grew up even earlier and say that is how things had been for their lifetimes as well all agree they were lost about the time I bought my first set of maxi pads. So DO NOT presume to know me..or anything about me or make some groundless comment about what I know or do not..It is an arrogance of the highest order for you to tell me that my feelings and opinions of my OWN EXPERIENCES IN LIFE are without knowledge. You deflate any legitimacy in your opinions when you come off like that. Incomprehensible my arse...

I've worked management roles in two different companies with 100+ employees, one with really good HR and one without. No. Comparison. At. All.

...You know what pisses me off ...It's that the folks on here older than Cheerleader age, that have been in the workforce for the 20 + years that I have who grew up in a vastly different time when people respected actual values vs. BS nonsense like this topic know I've got a valid point (admittedly dramatized) but are too chicken to speak up because they are scared of the JC mafia...

I'm older than you by more than 10 years and I'll only agree with part of your statement - Tolerance of the old "norms" has changed. I disagree with you in that I believe those changes are a good thing.

Racist/bigoted/hateful/hurtful speech do not belong in the workplace.

You mean the "Don Draper called the elevator man 'boy'" defense isn't valid? :)

Peggy, forward my calls and bring me more Scotch. I've got a 4 o'clock.

And if we're a mafia, can I be "The Don"? I always thought being part of the mafia would pay better.

And here in California, it's pretty much a guaranteed way to get yourself canned without undue delay.

Everywhere I've worked since I started working six years ago has had zero, repeat zero, tolerance for hate speech in the workplace.

I never said they weren't. I feel that though "tolerance" for such a thing has a real reason to be decreased, I do not believe that invading the boundaries of private opinion and communication regardless of venue for the purposes of censure or discipline is a good thing..The reason being is that once that genie is let out of the bottle, and we accept it is the norm, it will grow larger and larger until the good it does today, turns into the oppression of tomorrow.

Unless you're a minority it seems. My mothers work place had an issue like this but the person in question was Hispanic and got away with quite a bit before he eventually just quit.

And for the record since we are gonna air the dirty laundry in public, the term JC Mafia was something we used to kick around in the old aim chat to describe a core group of regular users that were known for their investigative talents, I do not now, nor have I ever used that phrase to describe you or the staff. If others have that is separated from how I used it.

Well said RSG!
