Very, very true.

I am stunned that it was Leonardo DaVinci who wrote it, however.
 
Yep that's DaVinci and definitely one of my favorite aviation quotes! I used to quote that to my students and then have them guess who said it. I don't think a single one got it right.
 
What gets me, is that he never flew (as far as I know).

Could you imagine going back in time with what we know now about gliders, balloons, hang-gliders...

Everywhere I've found the quote except this page has said it was DaVinci. Craziness!

I so love the quote and until proven otherwise, it'll stay as quoted by DaVinci. :)

My other favorite aviation quotes:
"Flying is the second greatest thrill known to man; landing is the first" & "To most, the sky is the limit. To pilots, it's home"

He always was trying to create flying machines though. Some of my favorite works of art are his renderings of flying machines.

I like what Gann said.
You can always tell when a man has lost his soul to flying. The poor bastard is hopelessly committed to stopping whatever he is doing long enough to look up and make sure the aircraft purring overhead continues on course and does not suddenly fall out of the sky. It is also his bound duty to watch every aircraft within view take off and land.

I seem to remember some of them actually resembling airplanes, too. Seems like they even had some potential.
