ATP plane down at FWS

Ya you're right, I just didn't like the feeling of being "that guy" in the 172. Either way lol, the job got done.

Its just ingrained habit pattern. I still do it in the C550 after so long of doing it, and even catch myself doing it in the UH-60 by accident sometimes. Some habits die hard.

The front of that thing is munched, glad the pilots were uninjured.

It isn't a bad habit so why kill it? Extra redundancy can't hurt.

Very true. Just have to make sure I do it in the FW, as the RW I fly don't need it......unless I start flying a Bell-222 or Augusta 109 sometime. But I agree, its not a bad habit. Its what Id been doing daily for many years of mil flying.

Why military ATC does the gear check.

2-1-24. WHEELS DOWN CHECK
USA/USAF/USN

Remind aircraft to check wheels down on each approach unless the pilot has previously reported wheels down for that approach.

NOTE: The intent is solely to remind the pilot to lower the wheels, not to place responsibility on the controller.

a. Tower shall issue the wheels down check at an appropriate place in the pattern.

PHRASEOLOGY: CHECK WHEELS DOWN.

b. Approach/arrival control, GCA shall issue the wheels down check as follows:
1. To aircraft conducting ASR, PAR, or radar monitored approaches, before the aircraft starts descent on final approach.
2. To aircraft conducting instrument approaches and remaining on the radar facility's frequency, before the aircraft passes the outer marker/final approach fix.

PHRASEOLOGY: WHEELS SHOULD BE DOWN.

As you can see the geniuses at FAA saw no need to add the condition of "unless the aircraft is know to have permanently fixed gear"

The mil-only guys do what they're trained and used to, as making a gear call is required by reg for their ops EVEN at a civilian field. That habit certainly and understandably would transfer over to a civil aircraft.

How many mil aircraft land gear up per number of operations?

We get a "check wheels down" call from the tower at VPS when we come in with the RJ. Nothing wrong with it. It's how they do business. Also, when I was instructing pretty much all my Mil guys would make a wheels down call to tower when they checked in and this was in a Seminole. Again, it's how they do business so it's no big deal. I did start requesting returns to a radar pattern after a while so I guess some of the military phraseology is contagious.

And a picture of 1ES from better days.

Meh, I think its silly to make a gear down call on freq in a freakin 172!

Military pilots kick me in the balls sometimes.

I would facepalm too.

Sure it is a good practice, but if you are in a 172 today I'd expect the wherewithal to omit the verbal gear down call to tower.
